This season has proven to be a challenging one for the Chennai Super Kings as the five-time champions have been struggling with their form. While struggling in their last clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, young batter Ayush Mhatre’s knock grabbed the limelight.
Amidst setbacks, Mhatre’s bat raised high, but unfortunately, he missed his well-deserved hundred. Despite the defeat, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag hailed his brilliant knock.
Sehwag Praises Mhatre’s Brilliance
Joining the Chennai Super Kings as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s replacement, the Mumbai batter showcased his brilliance in the last match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While chasing the target of 214 runs, CSK’s batting lineup shattered, but Mhatre tightened his grip to hold control.
After smashing a thrilling half-century in just 25 balls, but ended up with a heartbreak after being dismissed on 94. Despite the near-century, his selfless approach, putting the team first, earned widespread praise. Even Virender Sehwag couldn’t help but commend his selfless approach.
“He played according to the ball that was bowled to him. He missed his shot, otherwise, in fact, it was a ball that should have been ideally struck for a six. Had the cutter found the middle of the bat, then it would have been a six for sure,” he said.
“Agar voh apna sau ke baare mei soch rahe hote toh definitely woh shot to nahi khelte (If he was thinking about his hundred, he would have not played that shot). So, that means that it was clear that he wanted to get a boundary early in the over, which is why he attempted the shot,” he added.
CSK’s Heartbreaking Narrow Defeat
The setbacks are not leaving the CSK behind; their latest defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru is a living example of that. Despite Pathirana securing 3 crucial scalps while bowling first, the CSK bowlers struggled to restrict the RCB batters to a small total as they put on a massive 213-run total.
While chasing down the total, their woes deepened with their continuous batting struggle. After Saik Rasheed and Sam Curran’s early dismissals, Ravindra Jadeja and Ayush Mhatre stitched a powerful 114-run partnership. Dhoni’s departure for just 12 sealed their fate, as they fell agonizingly short, losing by just 2 runs in a nail-biting finish.
