Andre Russell is now 37 years old; an age where many cricketers start thinking about retirement. Though he’s a big name in the IPL, Russell hasn’t been in great form this season. But on Sunday, he silenced his critics by smashing a quickfire 57 runs off just 25 balls, helping Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) post a strong total.

Despite that great knock, fans are wondering, is this Russell’s final IPL season? Will he retire after 2025? Well, KKR’s spinner Varun Chakravarthy has now shared a big update on this.

Varun Chakravarthy Backs Russell, Says He’s Not Done Yet

After KKR’s thrilling 1-run win over Rajasthan Royals, Varun Chakravarthy spoke in a post-match interview and praised Russell. He also revealed what Russell had told him about his future in the IPL.

“As far as I’ve spoken to him and interacted with him, he still wants to play another two or three cycles of the IPL – which is easily six more years. He looks fine and fit. It doesn’t matter how old you are, as long as you’re contributing to the team. That’s the mindset. In franchise cricket, no one’s going to question that,” Chakravarthy said.

Andre Russell’s Comeback Knock at Eden Gardens

Russell answered his critics with a brilliant half-century against RR at Eden Gardens. He started slow, taking his time against spinners, and then went full throttle in the last few overs, especially hammering Maheesh Theekshana to help KKR cross 200 runs.

Some people say Russell struggles against spin bowling, but Varun completely disagreed. He said,

"That's not true - it's not like he can't hit spin. He can hammer spin; we've all seen it before. Even in net practice, he smashes it. But today, he chose a different approach, and that was very smart from him. I could see that, and I can tell you it's part of his development."

Andre Russell's Form This IPL Season

This season, Russell has had an average run so far. In 11 matches, he has scored 129 runs at an average of 18.43, but his strike rate is an impressive 161.25,  which proves he can still hit big shots and change the game quickly.

His unbeaten 57 against RR was his best score this season and a reminder of how dangerous he can be in the final overs. KKR still sees him as a game-changer.

Thanks to his power-hitting, KKR grabbed two valuable points and now have 11 points from 11 games. With their next match at home against Chennai Super Kings, KKR will look to strengthen their chances of making it to the playoffs.
