Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has urged current skipper Babar Azam to focus solely on cricket and avoid distractions on social media, emphasising that Babar has the potential to surpass even his own monumental record and reach 15,000 runs in Test cricket.
Babar Azam, once pronounced as Pakistan’s modern day legend, has struggled to score runs in the past couple of years. Back-to-back failures forced him to relieve captaincy before PCB reinstated him as white ball captain ahead of the T20 World Cup.
However, the recent awful performances in the home Tests series against Bangladesh has endangered Babar Azam’s relevance in international cricket as his own country has turned against him.
Younis Khan comes in support of Babar Azam!
Amid a nervous time, former Pakistan success captain Younis Khan has advised Babar Azam to avoid distractions and devote his sole focus to improving his performance. He revealed how fans often tell him that Babar has the potential to surpass his record of 15,000 runs in red ball cricket.
"There are high expectations from Babar, and while players use social media, their real answers should come through the bat and ball," Younis Khan said.
Hence, Babar Azam should prioritise silencing the critics with the bat, said Khan. He also drew parallel from Virat Kohli who rediscovered his dominance as batter after quitting as Indian team captain.
"Performance is what matters; captaincy is a small thing," he added.
The upcoming Test series against England will be a litmus test for Babar Azam as he will be fighting for his spot in the playing XI.
Kamran Akmal shares insights on Babar Azam’s struggles
Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal exposed Babar Azam’s shortcomings in an honest assessment. He opined that Babar is often unsure of his off-stump line, which leaves his leg stump exposed.
Moreover, deliveries that should be hit towards covers are being played straight as the bat and ball’s alignment isn’t symmetrical.
Indeed, Babar Azam’s painful run has sabotaged Pakistan’s rise in international cricket, as they are now being tasked with staying competitive even against associate member nations.
