Sanju Samson is thrilled about the next chapter of his IPL journey as he prepares to play for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2026 season. Samson was traded from the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to CSK for Rs 18 crore, making it one of the most high-profile moves ahead of the upcoming auction.

In an interview released by CSK (on Twitter), Samson opened up about his long-standing admiration for MS Dhoni and expressed how excited he is to finally share the dressing room with him. The 31-year-old said that being around Dhoni again feels like something that was destined to happen.

Sanju Samson overjoyed to join CSK

In the clip, Samson also recalled first meeting Dhoni when he was just 19 years old and selected for India’s tour of the UK. However, after that tour, Samson mostly saw Dhoni during IPL matches. 

I first met him when I got into the Indian team. Mahi Bhai was the captain. I interacted with him for 10–20 days. There will always be a crowd in front of him—five people here, ten people there,” Samson said. “I used to think, ‘Okay, I can’t meet him here, I will have to meet him separately." he said.

Now, with the move to CSK, Samson feels fortunate that their paths are crossing again in the same team. 

"Destiny has got me to come and play with him in one dressing room. I am looking forward to having breakfast with him, practicing with him, playing with him." he said with excitement.

Sanju Samson praises CSK dressing room

Sanju Samson also spoke highly of CSK’s environment, saying he has only heard positive things from domestic and international players alike. 

"One thing every cricketer says is that CSK has one of the finest dressing rooms in the IPL," he shared.

He added that CSK’s consistency and championship record have always made the franchise special. 

"Whenever we played against CSK, we could see how big the franchise is and what a winning legacy they have,” Samson said. 

He admitted that he has been excited about the move for months and feels proud to wear the iconic yellow jersey.

Dhoni’s special role with CSK

CSK, one of the most successful teams in IPL history with five titles, earned all their trophies under Dhoni’s leadership. Last season, Dhoni captained the side as CSK struggled and finished last in the 2025 points table in the absence of their regular skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad.

However, it is important to note that before 2026, CSK confirmed that Ruturaj will continue as captain.
