'Darr Lagta Hai Aajkal...': Prithvi Shaw Takes A Cheeky Dig At Selectors Following His Team India Snub

Indian opener, Prithvi Shaw has experienced a decline in his cricket career and his exclusion from the Asian Games highlights his diminished status. Unlike other players vying for a spot in the World Cup, Shaw was not even considered due to conflicting schedules between the two tournaments.

At the age of 23, Shaw, who holds the record for being the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut at 18, has not been as successful in international cricket as many had hoped. His promising potential was evident five years ago, but a combination of injuries, disciplinary problems, and technical flaws prevented him from establishing a consistent presence in any format. Shaw's international appearances have been limited to just five Tests, six ODIs, and a solitary T20I.

Following his absence from the Indian team since the Sri Lanka tour in 2021, Shaw returned to the T20I side for the series against New Zealand at home last year. Despite his inclusion, he did not get an opportunity to play and was subsequently overlooked for both the West Indies series and the Asian Games.

Shaw, who finds himself at a crucial juncture in his career, expressed his confusion over the reason behind his exclusion from the T20I team without even getting a chance to showcase his skills and  in an interview with Cricbuzz said:

"When I was dropped [from the Indian team], I didn't get to know the reason."

A significant factor contributing to Shaw's exclusion could be his underwhelming performance in the IPL 2023. After scoring a mere 116 runs in 8 matches, he was dropped from the Delhi Capitals' playing XI. Throughout the tournament, Shaw struggled against raw pace and swing, with opposing teams exploiting these weaknesses by targeting him with short deliveries or in-swinging deliveries early on in his innings.

While Shaw expressed his disappointment at not being selected for the West Indies T20Is, he emphasized that his fitness is not a concern and further added:

"Someone was saying it could be fitness. But of course, I came here [to Bengaluru] and cleared all the tests at the NCA, again scored runs and again came back to the T20 team. But again didn't get a chance in the West Indies. I'm disappointed but you just have to move forward. I can't do anything, I can't fight with anyone."

"As a person, I just like to be in my own zone. People say a lot of things about me. But those who know me, know how I am. I don't have friends, I don't like to make friends. This is what's happening with this generation. You can't share your thoughts with anyone else. If you ask me personally, it's very scary. Darr lagta hai aajkal to share my thoughts. Agle din social media mein aa jaata hai (I'm scared to share my thoughts. Somehow all of it comes up on social media). I've very less friends, only a couple of friends, and even with them I don't share everything, only a few things," he also said.

At present due to visa complications, Shaw's planned departure on Tuesday was postponed. However, he is now scheduled to participate in the remaining matches of the County Championship as well as The Royal London Cup (one-day matches) commencing in August.
