India's wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul has provided insights into his injury recovery journey, revealing that he could have returned earlier for the 2023 Asia Cup.
In a video released by the BCCI, Rahul disclosed that he encountered a minor setback during his recovery process, which delayed his return. He expressed confidence that he was ahead of his rehabilitation schedule and believed he could have rejoined the team well in advance of the Asia Cup. Rahul's injury, a thigh ailment sustained during IPL 2023, necessitated surgery and resulted in an extended absence from the game.
"Unfortunately, in the recovery process, I developed a small niggle just before I could come back into the team, which was a big downer. I was actually ahead of schedule, and I felt like I could come back much before the Asia Cup and give myself a lot of time to prepare," said KL Rahul on BCCI TV.
The Karnataka-based cricketer acknowledged the inevitable ebbs and flows of recovery, underscoring the importance of mental readiness in navigating these challenges.
"Unfortunately, one more niggle set me back a couple of weeks. So yeah, I went through a bit of ups and downs within the recovery period as well. So that's part of it. I was ready mentally, so I think that really helped," Rahul added.
Toss-up between Rahul and Ishan
During Rahul's absence, Ishan Kishan took on the mantle against Pakistan in the Asia Cup's group stage, delivering a stellar performance with a brisk 81-ball 82. Kishan's string of four consecutive ODI half-centuries underscores his remarkable form.
As India prepares to face arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super 4 clash on September 10, the team faces a significant decision regarding their lineup. Rahul's return after an extended injury layoff, coupled with Ishan's remarkable form, presents a selection dilemma.
This contest, a highly anticipated encounter between two Asian giants, could once again be affected by weather conditions, similar to their previous group stage fixture. Consequently, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) wisely allocated a reserve day for this match, a precaution not extended to other Super Four games, underlining its significance in the six-team tournament.
