Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hailed Virat Kohli's match-winning prowess and reinforced why his legendary Indian teammate is critical to the nation's chance of winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and the USA.

Even as his return to the shortest format after 15 months had been criticised in certain sections, with his struggles versus spin falling under scrutiny, Ashwin backed the great right-hander to come out triumphant for India in another edition of the biannual ICC event.

Kohli made an interesting return to India's T20I outfit via the just-concluded three-match series against Afghanistan. After missing the opening game in Mohali, he came up with a blistering cameo of 29 in the second T20I in Indore.

Ashwin Backs Kohli For T20 World Cup 2024

Even though the player then missed out in the third encounter in Bangalore with a rare first-ball duck, his excellent intent and aggressive streak promised a new dawn heading into what could be his final appearance at a T20 World Cup.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin first lauded Kohli as one of the greatest ever players to have graced the cricket field and then analysed why the man's consistent and dependable nature is important to the Indian team's chances.

For Ashwin, given the tricky nature of pitches in the West Indies and USA, Kohli's ability to anchor the innings and keep one end solid will be key to Rohit Sharma's men posting sizeable enough scores.

"Virat Kohli is one of the greatest Indian batters to have graced the game," Ashwin said. "Kohli's consistency in T20 Cricket is Insane. And pitches will not always be same everywhere and adaptability and consistency has always been key in T20 cricket. That is why we talk about Virat Kohli so much," Ashwin said. "In the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies, pitches (will be) almost similar to Chepauk, (they)will be slow and turn and matches will be low scoring. That is why consistency is important and Kohli's role is a key factor for India."

The form Kohli exhibited even during his brief stint at the crease in the Afghanistan series would be a source of great encouragement for the team management and the selectors, who would now hope he continues in this vein through the IPL 2024 and then the T20 World Cup for India.
