In a major blow to the West Indies, captain Rovman Powell has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20I series against Pakistan due to a wrist injury sustained during the Australia series.

The 32-year-old suffered the injury while attempting a catch in the fourth T20I on July 26 and missed the subsequent matches, including the opening T20I against Pakistan, which the West Indies lost by 14 runs. No replacement will be named for Powell, and Shai Hope will continue to lead the side in the 3rd T20I as well.

Cricket West Indies Confirms Powell's Absence

The hosts will now rely on their remaining batters for the remaining T20I on August 4 in Lauderhill, followed by a three-match ODI series in Trinidad starting August 8. Powell, who last played an ODI in 2023, is unlikely to feature in the 50-over squad as well, further depleting West Indies' experience in the middle order.

"Rovman Powell will not be available for the rest of the T20I series against Pakistan. He suffered a wrist injury during the Australia series and has not recovered in time. No replacement will be named," a Cricket West Indies (CWI) statement confirmed.

Will Powell Return For The ODIs?

Rovman Powell’s absence now creates a void for the ODI leadership as well, with Shai Hope likely to continue leading the side in the ODIs. Nevertheless, the injury comes at a crucial time for the West Indies, who are preparing for next year’s T20 World Cup on home soil.

Powell’s power-hitting and tactical acumen will be sorely missed as the team looks to bounce back after a shaky start against Pakistan. With no like-for-like replacement, the middle order will need to step up in his absence in the remaining matches against Pakistan.

West Indies squad for 3rd T20I against Pakistan: Shai Hope (captain), Jewel Andrew, Alick Athanaze, Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd.
