'Can't Score Runs From Dugout': Tom Moody Baffled by DC's Decision to Snub Prithvi Shaw

After Delhi Capitals went down with their second consecutive marginal loss of the IPL 2024 season, former Australia cricketer Tom Moody called Prithvi Shaw's omission from the lineup to promote a domestic player like Ricky Bhui an unreasonable choice.

DC lacked firepower with the bat in the recently concluded IPL 2024 fixture against RR. Despite a strong start, Rishabh Pant and Co. fell short of 12 runs in the 186 runs chase.

Naturally, questions over the team's imbalanced composition were bound to arise. Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody addressed the elephant in the room while talking to ESPN Cricinfo.

Moody questioned the omission of promising 24-year-old opener Prithvi Shaw. Once touted as one of the most destructive batters, Shaw's career trajectory fell downward in the aftermath of injuries.

After an ill-fated IPL season in 2023 wherein he scored just 106 runs across eight innings at an average of 13.25, DC dropped him this year to promote promising domestic batter Ricky Bhui.

However, the decision to sidelined an opener with significant international experience to uplift a domestic talent with single digit scores does not make sense to Moody.

The former cricketer expressed that while Prithvi Shaw hasn't performed in IPL lately, DC must give him a chance to reprieve since runs cannot be scored from warming the bench in the dugout.

"It doesn't make sense due to the fact that you've got an Indian international player (Prithvi Shaw) in the dugout. Yes, he hasn't performed in the IPL like we had all hoped he would, but you can't score runs from the dugout," Moody said.

That being said, DC mentor Sourav Ganguly defended management's decision to drop Shaw, saying they wanted to back the Australian destructive pair of Warner and Marsh. Ricky Bhui's selection has nothing to do with Shaw, as the former is a middle-order batter.

However, with Bhui failing to adapt to IPL standards, DC must stay proactive to avoid more losses in the future.
