Ahead of the much-anticipated first Test match against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 in Chennai, Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media. Among the various topics discussed, one of the key issues that came to light was the workload management of India’s premier fast bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
While the batting lineup seems solid, the Indian pace bowling unit requires careful consideration, especially with the challenges posed by managing workload.
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace pacer, has been rested for an extended period following the T20 World Cup in 2024, primarily due to workload management. This strategy aims to preserve his fitness and ensure that he is in optimal condition for crucial matches.
When questioned about the absence of Bumrah and other key bowlers, Rohit Sharma addressed the importance of balancing the physical demands placed on fast bowlers.
“Want our best players to play all the game but it’s not possible. You’ve to see what’s best for the team and manage your bowlers accordingly. It all depends on the workload that is being carried by them. We will monitor that, we’ve been doing that well. Against England, we gave breaks to Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj. So, we will keep assessing them. You want everyone to play all the game, we’ve got a lot of bowlers. We saw exciting prospects in Duleep Trophy. I am not too worried about the kind of bowlers waiting in the wings," Rohit Sharma said on Tuesday.
Jasprit Bumrah Practices Rigorously In Nets
Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the cricket field has garnered significant attention. After an extended break, he is now back in action and was seen practicing rigorously in the nets. On Monday, during a practice session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Bumrah bowled to Indian stars Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli.
During this session, Bumrah put Kohli’s skills to the test, experimenting with his variations. At one point, Bumrah's delivery rapped Kohli on the pads, prompting a playful celebration and a mock DRS signal from Bumrah. Kohli, however, humorously gestured that the ball was missing the leg stump, as reported by The Sportstar.
