Sri Lanka are gearing up to host New Zealand in a two-match Test series as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. After an intense tour of England, which the Lankan Lions lost 2-1, they return to home soil looking to turn the tide. Despite the series loss, Sri Lanka secured a historic away win against England in the third Test at The Oval.

Meanwhile, New Zealand last played Test cricket against Australia in March 2024, where they faced a 2-0 defeat.

New Zealand are currently ranked third in the WTC points table with 50.00 percentage points, trailing behind finalists India and Australia. Sri Lanka, with a percentage of 42.86, sits at the fifth spot. The Blackcaps were scheduled to face Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Noida, India, but the match was canceled due to rain and unsafe outfield conditions.

Both teams are eyeing a crucial victory in this series to climb higher in the WTC standings. New Zealand, after six Tests, holds the third position, while Sri Lanka, after seven Tests, is positioned fifth.
