The fourth edition of Lanka Premier League (LPL) commenced on Sunday, July 30th, which saw the defending champions Jaffna Kings locking horns against Colombo Strikers. The former secured a 21-run victory in the tournament opener held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

After being put to bat first, Jaffna Kings witnessed a scintillating start thanks to Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz. However, the excitement was cut short by Pakistan's Naseem Shah, who dismissed Gurbaz after his quickfire 21 runs off 11 deliveries.

Gurbaz's dismissal came through an exceptional catch by Ramesh Mendis, who sprinted from long-on to claim the catch. Shah's excitement was evident, and he couldn't resist exchanging words with Gurbaz as he walked off.

However, Gurbaz refrained from escalating the matter, calmly walking towards the dugout without giving any response to the Pakistan pacer.

Gurbaz received a stroke of luck early in the match when, on just one run, he got a fortunate reprieve. In the first over bowled by Naseem Shah, he edged the ball thickly, but it quickly raced past the slip fielder and found its way to the boundary ropes.

As long as the match is concerned, Jaffna Kings, after being put into bat first, posted 173 runs for the loss of five wickets. Towhid Hridoy was the top run-scorer for them, having scored 54 runs from 39 balls.

Colombo pacer Naseem Shah was pretty decent in his spell, bowling four overs, conceding 30 runs while picking up just one wicket. In reply, the Strikers fell 21 runs short of the target despite a half-century knock from captain Niroshan Dickwella.
