Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, once hailed as one of the most naturally gifted batters, is currently on the path to recovery after enduring years of physical and mental health struggles. He has suffered serious issues related to brain blood clots, heart conditions, depression, and alcohol addiction.
Yograj Singh On Vinod Kambli’s Lost Potential
In a recent interview, Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has brought renewed attention to the choices that derailed Kambli’s once-promising career. In a candid conversation with InsideSport, Yograj revealed a stern warning he had given Kambli early in his career.
“I told Vinod Kambli once, ‘These parties, smoking cigarettes, going to girls – stop it; otherwise you’ll be finished, and you’ll be crying. See what happened to him. I was talking to him personally but then he said, ‘Sir, apka time chala gaya (your time has passed). He used to think, ‘I’m the king’. You are not bigger than the game,” Yograj Singh told InsideSport.
The Mumbai-born cricketer made his debut with a bang in 1993. He scored two double centuries in his first seven Tests, and became one of the fastest players to reach 1,000 Test runs. By 1995, however, his red-ball journey was over, despite a remarkable Test average. His career was overshadowed by reports of alleged disciplinary issues, and persistent fitness concerns.
Vinod Kambli's Health Struggles
In recent years, Kambli’s health sharply declined. He suffered a heart attack in 2013, underwent angioplasty for two blocked arteries, and has since been in and out of rehabilitation centres to treat alcohol dependency. Recently, he was also treated for blood clots in his brain. Despite the long, difficult road, Kambli is reportedly making positive strides.
