"Steve Smith has suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding in the slip cordon during the ICC Men's World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord's. He was assessed by Australian team medical staff at the ground and taken to hospital for x-rays and further treatment, confirmed by Cricket Australia as quoted by ICC.
Steve Smith's Catch Attempt Proves Painful
The confirmation of the injury means that Steve Smith will not take any further part in the WTC final against South Africa. The injury happened in the 20th over of South Africa's second innings. Mitchell Starc was the bowler and he found an outside edge off the blade of Temba Bavuma.
It was a straightforward catch, but Smith was late to react and ended up dropping the catch. In the process, the Australian also hurt his finger and after some treatment from the physio, Smith decided to walk off the field.
It is still not clear how much time it will take for Steve Smith to recover from the injury. However, with only around 12 days remaining for the West Indies series, the star batter might miss Australia's first tour in the next WTC cycle.
