Bangladesh cricketers have joined hands to protest against a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official for making controversial remarks against celebrated opening batter Tamim Iqbal.
Earlier, finance committee chairman M Nazmul Islam had accused Tamim Iqbal of being an “Indian agent” after the latter had urged the board to prioritize Bangladesh cricket amidst the nation’s ongoing geo-political tensions and severing cricketing ties with India.
The Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has now raised an official complaint to the BCB president to take a strict action against the finance committee chairman.
Bangladesh players Taskin, Mominul and others condemn BCB official’s remarks
In an official statement CWAB has written to the board regarding the recent controversial comments made by BCB director M Nazmul Islam against former opener Tamim Iqbal.
The association stated, “Such a remark by a board official about the most successful opener in Bangladesh's history, who represented the country for 16 years, is utterly condemnable. We strongly protest against this comment. When a responsible board director makes such remarks on a public platform, it also raises serious questions about the code of conduct of board officials.”
Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed also condemned the remarks and hoped that the concerned authorities will adopt a “more responsible stance” going ahead.
The speedster said, “I believe that such remarks directed at a former cricketer of the country are not helpful in the interest of Bangladesh cricket. I hope the concerned authorities will consider the matter seriously and adopt a more responsible stance in the future.”
His teammate Mominul Haque also defended Tamim Iqbal, and slammed the BCB director for his questionable behaviour.
Haque said “The comment made by BCB director M Nazmul Islam regarding former national captain Tamim Iqbal is completely unacceptable and insulting to the country's cricketing community. Such behaviour towards a cricketer is in direct conflict with the board's responsibility and ethics.”
The BCB director made the controversial remarks against Tamim Iqbal after the cricketer urged the board to prioritize Bangladesh cricket before the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Iqbal’s statement itself occurred shortly after the BCB decided that it will not be sending the Bangladesh team to India for the showpiece event next month, largely owing to BCCI’s decision of disbarring Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 and owing to the prevailing geo-political tensions between the two countries.
