Babar Azam is set to make his T20I return for Pakistan through the upcoming three-match series against South Africa at home. The legendary Pakistani batter was called back into the national 20-overs side earlier this month by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Babar played the last of his 128 T20I matches back in December 2024 during a series in South Africa, thus making the upcoming home series his return to the format after nearly a year. A couple of days prior to the series opener at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson gave a crucial update regarding the cricketer’s potential batting position.
Babar Azam to bat number three for Pakistan, confirms coach
While speaking with the reporters, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson confirmed that comeback man Babar Azam will likely bat at number three in the upcoming three-match series against South Africa. Mike also expressed his confidence over the legendary right-handed batter, claiming that the 31-year-old will make full use of the batting position by performing well for the team.
The New Zealand-based head coach said:
“Babar Azam is likely to bat at number three. I'm very confident he will do well.”
Babar Azam, a veteran of 128 T20I matches, has opened the innings on 87 occasions in his glittering career. The seasoned pro is also familiar with the number three position in T20I cricket, considering he has graced the position 32 times for the ‘Men in Green’.
While batting at number three, Babar Azam has minted 1,166 runs at a strike rate of 127.85 and with an average of 44.84, thus marking significantly higher than his career T20I average of 39.83. Babar has tonked 11 half-centuries at the position, but is yet to notch up a T20I century.
Pakistan’s T20I series against South Africa will commence from October 28 onwards in Rawalpindi.
