Babar Azam is just 9 runs away from becoming the highest run-scorer in the T20I format. Currently, the record is held by former Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

For almost a decade, Babar has been the epitome of grace and reliability in T20 cricket. His cover drives, his composure in pressure situations, and his appetite for runs have established him as one of Pakistan's best batters in all formats.

Now, as he prepares for his long-awaited return to the T20I side in the series against South Africa, Babar is on the brink of achieving yet another significant achievement.

Babar Azam eyeing historic milestone in South Africa series

Currently, Rohit Sharma leads the all-time T20I run charts with 4231 runs from 159 matches. Hot on his heels is Babar Azam, who has scored 4223 runs from just 128 games, a gap of just 8 runs separating the two giants.

2 good strokes through the covers in the upcoming series, and Babar will officially sit atop the mountain of T20I batting greatness.

Most runs in men's T20Is

  • Rohit Sharma - 4231
  • Babar Azam - 4223
  • Virat Kohli - 4188
  • Jos Buttler - 3869

Babar’s journey to this moment hasn’t been without turbulence. After Pakistan's early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup, the classy right-hander was left out of the T20I squad.

Critics questioned his strike rate, his adaptability, and even his place in Pakistan’s modern T20 setup.

But Babar Azam has never been one to fade quietly. Over the past few months, he has gone back to domestic cricket, grinding it out with purpose, which is to refine his game, find his rhythm, and wait for his chance.

That moment has now arrived. He has been selected into Pakistan’s T20I squad for the upcoming South Africa series beginning on October 28.

Babar Azam's milestone is more than just numbers

Why this milestone is so remarkable is not simply the record itself, but the tale that tells it. While Rohit Sharma has built his legacy on flair and longevity, Babar Azam has defined his journey by consistency and class.

His average of nearly 40 in T20Is, significantly higher than Rohit’s 32, is a reflection of his reliability at the crease.

Overall, when Babar Azam walks out for the first T20I in South Africa at Rawalpindi, every eye will be on him. Eight runs. That’s all that separates him from rewriting history.

And for a man who has built his career on timing and patience, it feels poetic that destiny has set up one more perfectly placed delivery, waiting to be driven through the covers for yet another record-breaking moment.
