Indian all-rounder Axar Patel recently offered a candid and humorous perspective on his evolving role in cricket. Known primarily as a spin-bowling all-rounder, Axar has seen his career take a dynamic turn over the past year, reshaping how he views his contribution to the team.

In an engaging interview with ESPN, Axar described his versatility with a light-hearted analogy.

I started off as a batsman: Axar Patel

"Jis din jo chal gaya, wo allrounder ban jata hoon main (Whatever works for me on a given day, I become that variety of an allrounder)," he says with a smile. "If my bowling clicks, I am a bowling allrounder, if the batting clicks, then batting allrounder. I started off as a batsman, so I think I like my batting more. In the last two or three years, the kind of batting I have been doing, I feel I am now capable. I was not doing justice to my batting in the earlier years," he said.

During the IPL 2024 season with the Delhi Capitals, Axar showcased his batting flair by scoring 235 runs in 14 matches at a striking rate of 131.28.

He adapted his role as a floater, contributing crucial knocks and entertaining fans with his stroke play. His performance in the T20 World Cup was equally noteworthy, though not without challenges.

In the final against South Africa, Axar faced a tough moment when Heinrich Klaasen hit him for 24 runs in an over. Despite this, his significant innings of 47 from 31 balls, including four sixes, played a pivotal role in India's victory in Barbados.

Axar Patel will be seen in action in the Sri Lanka ODIs, as the BCCI has announced the ODI and T20Is squad for the tour starting on 27 July.
