India launched their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a thumping victory, steamrolling Ireland by eight wickets in a thrilling encounter in New York on Wednesday.

Under the captaincy of captain Rohit Sharma, India flexed their muscles, putting in a formidable performance with both bat and ball.

Choosing to field first after winning the toss, the Indian pacers turned up the heat, skittling the Irish for a paltry 96 in just 16 overs.

In reply, captain Rohit Sharma steadied the ship with a composed 52 off 37 balls on a challenging pitch, before retiring hurt.

Rishabh Pant played the finisher's role to perfection, remaining unbeaten at 36 from 26 balls, and sealing the deal with a magnificent six over the wicketkeeper's head.

In the post-match presentation, Rohit shared insights into the team's strategy and his thoughts on the pitch at the new venue.

"The arm is just a little sore. Quite unsure what to expect from the pitch. New venue and drop in pitches. I don't know how it's like to play on a pitch that is 5 months old. I was all about getting used to the conditions that's why we wanted to bowl first and see how the conditions played. All in all I think getting those 2 points was very important," said Rohit

With a cautious yet optimistic outlook towards the upcoming high-stakes match against Pakistan, Rohit remarked,

"I don't know what to expect from the pitch but we will prepare as if the conditions are going to be like that. We need to regroup and find out what everyone needs to do. This is going to be a kind of game where all 11 of us need to come together and contribute in whatever way they can.”

Reflecting on his performance and the team's approach, Rohit concluded,

"It was scratchy but good to spend some time in the middle and understand what the pitch is like and what shots you can play. Hopefully, we can come out again and play similar brand of cricket and get those 2 points as well.”

With this win, India has not only gained two valuable points but also a strong start in their quest for World Cup glory.
