South African cricket has gifted the cricket world its brightest ever star in the form of AB de Villiers. After his retirement, the search for a true heir ended when young prodigy Dewald Brevis stepped into the spotlight.
As Brevis has always been compared with AB’s brilliance, the duo also shares a good bond. In a recent interaction, the Protea youngster revealed the story of his first meeting with ABD.
Baby AB’s First Meeting With ABD
AB de Villiers has ruled the cricket world for years with brilliance, and the entire cricket world has lived some of the best moments of cricket. When he bid farewell, the search for a worthy successor began, and South Africa delivered once again. Youngster Dewald Brevis came to the limelight, mirroring ABD’s brilliance.
Echoing de Villiers’ intensity, batting brilliance, and ability to play innovative shots earned him the nickname ‘Baby AB’. Being an admirer of the South African legend, Brevis revealed his first meeting with AB while speaking to SuperSport recently.
“AB and his wife just walked past us, and somehow I just stood there star-struck. I wanted to ask for a picture, but I didn’t like it and I couldn’t get it out. Then his wife told, ‘AB, come AB, come for a picture, ' and that's how I got my first photo with him,” Brevis said.
A School Event Brings Them Together Again
After a dramatic first meeting, Dewald Brevis got a second chance to live in that dream again. It was at his school event where AB was present, and the youngster did something daring. In the recent interaction, Baby AB revealed how he asked for ABD’s phone number.
“Someone told us AB was at the school, and we rushed to see him. I was still star-struck and could hardly say anything. As he was about to leave, I suddenly asked, ‘AB, you can say no, but can I please have your number.’ He gave it to me, and later I sent him a message just to thank him,” he added.
Making his debut for South Africa in 2023, Dewald Brevis is rising through the ranks rapidly. In the recently ended T20I series against Australia, he ended up being the highest run scorer with 180 runs in three matches with an unbeaten ton. With him, South African cricket got another future superstar.
