The mid-season acquisition of Dewald Brevis during IPL 2025 by Chennai Super Kings for ₹2.2 Cr seemed like a desperate move at first. Four to five months later, it appears to be one of the shrewdest signings and a masterstroke by the franchise.

For IPL 2026, CSK face a retention that could define their chance to redeem their legacy. With Brevis transforming from an unknown commodity to an established name in the T20 circuit, it would be crucial for the five-time IPL champions to lock in such an extraordinary entity.

The Impact Analysis: Beyond Raw Numbers

The South African youngster scored 225 runs in six innings. But not only these numbers, he scored with a strike rate of 180 and revolutionised CSK's approach.

Along with his strike rate, Dewald Brevis proved to be even more effective because of his consistency. He scored around 38 runs every time he walked out to bat. 

Also, instead of the usual notion that he is a top-order batter, CSK used him in the middle-overs, and he delivered brilliantly. Given the impact he had on a phase of the game, he could potentially end up changing the complexion of a match; the franchise would be eager to retain him.

Brevis' IPL 2025 numbers, followed by his brilliant spell in international cricket, make him a highly sought-after entity for the next edition. Add to his performance, the age premium, and we can predict that if he comes up in the open-auction he could be sold for around ₹12-15 Cr.

Looking at the retention trends of other players who have performed close to Brevis, we can expect the South African to demand around ₹8-10 Cr at least to stay in the franchise. To retain Dewald Brevis, CSK will have to release a few of their players in the current squad to make room for him, and then also re-strategise for the mini-auction to fill the potential spots.
