Rohit Sharma confirmed his announcement from Test cricket amidst the ongoing IPL 2025 season on May 7. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be expected to name a new captain as Team India braces itself for their upcoming five-match Test tour of England.
In the wake of Sharma’s retirement, former Indian batting coach Abhishek Nayar congratulated the legendary Indian opener for leaving an everlasting impact on the game for “this generation”.

Taking to his Instagram account, former Indian cricketer and ex-batting coach Abhishek Nayar congratulated Test retired Rohit Sharma. Nayar also revealed that even though Sharma failed to fulfil his desire of playing 75 Tests for India by eight matches, the legendary Indian opener still managed to make an ever-lasting impact for this generation of rising stars and Indian fans.
Praising Rohit Sharma’s captaincy skills, Nayar further described him as,
“A leader like no other.”
It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma played 67 Tests for Team India ever since his debut in late-2013 during Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series. Plundering 4,301 runs in the process, the cricketer maintained an average of 40.57, and listed 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
However, Sharma endured a torrid run as a batter as well as a captain in the final few months of his Test career. Under his leadership, Team India lost its home Test series to New Zealand and conceded their Border-Gavaskar title back to Australia after nearly a decade.
Moreover, he averaged just 24.76 with the bat in the year 2024 by aggregating 619 runs in 26 innings spanning 14 Tests.
