On Wednesday evening, India's talismanic batter stunned the cricketing world, announcing his shocking retirement from Test cricket. Rohit took to his official social media handle, confirming his decision to bid farewell to Tests before the England tour.

Madan Lal Picks India's Next Test Captain

Meanwhile, former Indian fast bowler and a member of the iconic 1983 World Cup winning squad Madan Lal picked the perfect replacement for Rohit Sharma as India's next Test captain.

According to emerging reports, stylish batter Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to succeed Rohit in the leadership role. However, Madan Lal believes Jasprit Bumrah could be a better option than Gill and India should give the fast bowler an opportunity to lead the Test side.

"Jasprit Bumrah should get a chance. He has been doing very well. He is a permanent member of the team. We have some young players who can be made the vice-captain," Madan Lal was quoted as saying by TOI.

It's worth mentioning that Bumrah captained the Indian Test team in Rohit's absence in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy encounter in Perth. Interestingly, under the speedster's astute leadership, India defeated the mighty Aussies in their backyard, scripting history at Optus Stadium.

BCCI Planning To Remove Bumrah From Leadership: Reports

Although Madan Lal is keen to see Bumrah as India's next Test skipper, the BCCI is reportedly considering removing the pacer from the leadership group. As per the latest reports, the cricketing body plans to manage Bumrah's workload, which is why it might not burden him with additional responsibilities.

Bumrah recently recovered from a career-threatening back injury, which ruled him out of the Champions Trophy as well as the initial IPL 2025 matches. In such a scenario, it won't be surprising if the selectors take a bold call and appoint Gill as Rohit's successor in Tests.
