Former Australian cricketer and ex-coach Darren Lehmann has made a bold prediction for the upcoming 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between perennial arch-rivals Australia and India. The 54-year-old believes that the hosts, led by Pat Cummins, will win the opening Test at Perth before claiming the five-match series by a 3-1 margin.

Lehmann also stated that it is imperative for the Australian team to keep Indian captain Rohit Sharma and legendary middle-order batter Virat Kohli at bay throughout the series.

Darren Lehmann is of the opinion that the Australian cricket team will start their 2024-25 home summer with a win over India at the Optus Stadium in Perth this November. He also added that the opening win will set the stage of Australia’s 3-1 series triumph to retain the prestigious ‘Border-Gavaskar’ Trophy.

Taking to X on September 26, the former Australian World Cup-winning player and coach further emphasized the importance of preventing the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from flourishing in the series.

It is worth noting that Team India won each of its previous two Test expeditions in Australia, winning the 2018-19 and 2020-21 editions by an identical 2-1 margin under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane respectively.

Moreover, Team India is yet to lose a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ever since losing the 2014-15 edition in Australia.

As of now, the Indian team is hosting Bangladesh in a two-match Test series at home. Rohit Sharma and co. will subsequently host New Zealand in a series of three matches before taking flight for Australia in mid-November. The aforementioned fixtures also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle.
