Brad Hogg, the ex-Australian spinner, has criticized the ICC's decision to impose a 25% fine on England all-rounder Moeen Ali, considering it excessive. Moeen was penalized for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the initial Ashes Test against Australia.

Hogg took to Twitter to question why Moeen didn't apply the spray discreetly by leaving the field instead of doing it openly.

Moeen Ali, who had returned to the Test side after his initial retirement in 2021, was found to have violated Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to exhibiting conduct that goes against the spirit of the game.

In an official statement, the ICC confirmed that Moeen had been found guilty of breaching Article 2.20 of the Code of Conduct. The charge was filed by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Marais Erasmus, with support from third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth umpire Mike Burns.

“Moeen Ali was found to have breached Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game,” said the statement.

In the 89th over of Australia's first innings at Edgbaston, Moeen Ali was observed applying a drying agent to his bowling hand while fielding near the boundary line. This led to one demerit point being added to his disciplinary record for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. It is important to mention that this incident marks Moeen's first offense in the last two years.
