In a significant development, the BCCI selection committee named a formidable 15-member Indian squad for the 2023 World Cup on Tuesday afternoon. The announced team features familiar names, with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav etc being picked as the core members.

However, some players were omitted from the squad despite being admirable performers in white-ball cricket. So, as the much-awaited squad announcement event has concluded, here is the list of five unlucky players who unfortunately missed the cut.

Shikhar Dhawan

One of the finest ODI batters of this generation, Shikhar Dhawan could be tagged as India's man of ICC events, as he has led the side to many incredible victories in the World Cup and Champions Trophy. In 164 ODI innings, the stylish southpaw has amassed 6793 runs at a magnificent average of 44.11 and a blistering strike rate of 91.35.

However, Shubman Gill's rise collided with his decline, with India preferring the former as Rohit Sharma's opening partner. So, Dhawan's exclusion from the World Cup squad was expected although he was a pivotal part of the Indian ODI team during his prime.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Another cricketer who missed the 2023 World Cup berth by a whisker is Yuzvendra Chahal, who played a significant role in powering India to the semifinal in the tournament's previous edition. In 72 matches, the right-arm wrist spinner has scalped 121 wickets at an economy rate of 5.27.

However, despite being incredibly talented, Chahal's recent form reduced his chances of making it into the final fifteen, with India preferring his partner-in-crime Kuldeep Yadav for the lead spinner's role.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Regarded as one of finest-ever spinner in Indian cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin used to be a nightmare for any kind of opposition at his peak. Also, as India have two left-arm off spinners and a left-arm leg spinner, it was speculated that they might pick the experienced campaigner as the solitary right-arm off spinner to give a new dimension to their bowling unit. However, as it seems, India have moved on from him, as he misses out on the marquee event.

Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson has grabbed every single opportunity in ODIs, amassing 390 runs, including three fifties, at an average of 55.71 and an impressive strike rate of 104. The keeper-batter from Kerala also struck a flamboyant half century in one of the two matches he played in the West Indies ODIs. However, the management decided to go ahead with KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan as two keeper-batters, considering how they have fared in that role in the Indian batting order.

Tilak Varma

IPL sensation Tilak Varma rose to prominence during the recently concluded T20I series against West Indies, hammering 173 runs in five outings. Considering his T20 exploits, people expected him to get a wild card entry to the 2023 World Cup. However, the Indian think tank didn't make any last moment changes, persisting with the established names for the showpiece event.
