Team England continues to have a hard time in the 50-over format as they lost the first ODI against West Indies, who did not qualify for the World Cup 2023. The champions of the World Cup 2019 had a shameful group stage exit in the World Cup 2023 despite having the likes of Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, and Liam Livingstone, who are primarily known as the white ball guns of cricket.

Jos Buttler & Co. found themselves in a similar stage as they were after the disastrous World Cup 2015. Now they have done a similar thing, which was done by Eoin Morgan and are playing with a whole bunch of youngsters against West Indies.

In the ongoing ODI series against West Indies, England's fast bowler, Sam Curran, registered an unwanted record of conceding the most runs in an ODI inning in the first ODI.

Let's look at the top 5 English bowlers who conceded the most runs in a single ODI inning.

Sam Curran (98 runs in 9.5 overs) vs West Indies in 2023 at Antigua

The left-arm fast bowler of England, Sam Curran, who was the key player in England's run to win the T20 World Cup 2022 has found himself where no bowler would wish to be.

The first ODI of the England tour of West Indies was in the pocket of the English team till the 41st over of the second innings as they posted a decent total of 325. But Romario Shepherd and Shai Hope started hammering the bowlers after the 41st over, and Sam Curran was one of the bowlers who took the hammering. He went on to give 98 runs in his spell of 9.5 overs and conceded seven maximums. With this spell, he has recorded the worst figures for England in ODIs.

Steve Harmison (97 runs in 10 overs) vs Sri Lanka in 2006 at Leeds

The 6'5" tall, Steve Harmison was a potent force to England's red ball side. In 63 Tests, he went on to take 226 wickets with the best figures of 7/12. But his lethality was confined to red-ball cricket only as he was an average bowler when it came to the ODI format.

In the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2006, Steve Harmison gave nearly run a ball in his five spells of 10 overs each. In the fifth and the last ODI, Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga took on the England bowlers by smashing their hundreds. Jayasuriya did the actual damage to Steve, as he went on to score 152 runs, helping Sri Lanka post a mammoth total of 324. He went on to concede 97 runs in 10 overs including 12 fours.

Chris Jordan (97 runs in 9 overs) vs New Zealand in 2015 at The Oval

The right-arm fast bowler, Chris Jordan has been a bits and pieces player for the England team. He is known to bowl at a speed of 140+ consistently and can bowl some brilliant slower ones as well.

Apart from his pace and slower ones, he is also known as the one to leak too many runs in white-ball cricket. Back in 2015, when New Zealand toured England, he leaked 97 runs in his 9 overs spell, including seven sixes and eight fours and eventually helped the Kiwis to post a mammoth total of 398 runs, where Ross Taylor slammed a ton and Kane Williamson missed out on his hundred by a mere eight runs.

Jake Ball (94 runs in 10 overs) vs West Indies in 2017 at Southampton

Jake Ball was the first ever England player to take a five-wicket haul on ODI debut, but unfortunately, his international career could span only for a little more than two years. His height, pace and domestic performances helped him receive a call-up to make his international debut in 2016.

In 2017, when West Indies toured England with the likes of Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, and Ashley Nurse, Jake Ball could not find his lengths in the fifth ODI and went on to concede 94 runs in his 10 overs spell. Gayle and Nurse's hitting got the best of him as he was slammed for six boundaries and the same number of sixes, recording one of the worst ODI figures among English bowlers.

James Anderson (91 runs in 10 overs) vs Australia in 2011 at Sydney

When it comes to the stalwarts of cricket history, James Anderson is among the top ones. With 690 wickets in Test cricket and over 970 wickets in his international career, he has been one of the greatest bowlers in the history of cricket.

During the England tour of Australia 2011, in the sixth ODI between the cricketing giants, Jimmy Anderson had one of the worst days in his international career, as he went on to concede 91 runs in his 10 overs spell. It was a high-scoring game as Australia chased a mammoth total of 333 with four deliveries remaining, and unfortunately, it was Anderson who took the hammering.
