The Indian Premier League (IPL) remains one of the most anticipated T20 competitions in the world, which in recent times has seen an enormous rise.

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has set benchmarks in the sport across departments, which also include auctions and media rights. With the start of 2024, the murmur about the IPL 2024 season is already doing the round, where fans and experts are making their permutations and combinations for all the 10 participating franchises post a record-smashing auction in December.

The upcoming IPL will see many players make their maiden appearance, and for a handful of few, the 2024 season could also be their final swansong. In this article, we at OneCricket list down five cricketers, who could hang up their boots from IPL after featuring in the upcoming tourney.

MS Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni guiding India to their maiden T20 World Cup win in 2007, gave unprecedented hype to the Indian Premier League (IPL), which the player has been part of since its inception in 2008.

Joining Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as skipper, Dhoni has taken the franchise to unmatched heights, helping the Tamil Nadu-based club win as many as five IPL titles. The wicketkeeper-batter, who has played 250 IPL games and scored 5,082 runs will play his 16th-straight edition, which could potentially be his last in front of home crowds.

However, with a ever-problematic knee, Dhoni's time in the middle is numbered, which could moving forward hamper the franchise as well.

Apart from CSK, Dhoni featured in the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) as well in 2016 and 2017.

Ravindra Jadeja

Handpicked by former Australia legend late Shane Warne as an uncapped player, Ravindra Jadeja has grown into a player with extraordinary capabilities. While Jadeja learned the trick of the trade under Warne's guidance, his real talent flourished after his move to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2012, where MS Dhoni made the player into a reliable all-rounder.

Over the years, Jadeja became an integral part of CSK setup, which culminated into a short-unsuccessful captaincy stint as well in 2022, before handing the reins back to Dhoni.

With 226 IPL matches under his belt, Jadeja could hand up his boots after the 2024 edition, given his health and workload management. With 2,692 runs and 152 wickets, Jadeja has imprinted his mark in IPL for many years to come.

Rohit Sharma

Much like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma has been part of IPL's DNA since 2008, having featured in all 15th editions thus far.

Starting from a lower-order batter with Deccan Chargers (DC), Sharma played several impact knocks for the now-defunct franchise and helped them clinch their only IPL title in 2009.  However, Sharma found his mojo with Mumbai Indians, while playing alongside several legends, which only added to the batter's confidence.

As captain, Sharma became the first to claim five IPL titles under his belt and one Champions League T20 trophy.  With captaincy changing hands for the 2024 season, and his fitness being a recurring issue, Sharma who is the league's fourth-highest run-getter would look to round off his stellar career with another title before bidding IPL adieu.

Shikhar Dhawan

One of the most jolly and loved cricketers in the IPL has been Shikhar Dhawan.

Dhawan, who started his career with Delhi Daredevils, has built a reputation for himself for being the most consistent player over the years. Dhawan despite changing multiple franchises during his initial years, displayed his talent regardless, finally making the most of his talent during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Between 2016 and 2022, Dhawan scored and ended up scoring more than 400+ runs in each season. Dhawan, who turns 39 this year, will captain Punjab Kings in the 2024 title, and look to finish his career on a high, having played 217 IPL matches, amassing 6,617 runs, which include the most numbers of fours.

David Warner

Coming in with a reputation for being a T20 specialist, David Warner played his first IPL season in 2009 with Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils). Warner displayed great aggressive abilities during his initial years, which helped him establish himself in the Australian national setup as well.

Warner thrived during his tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where the player won his only IPL title in 2016 leading the side, and then unceremoniously moved back to Delhi in 2022. The opener, who in 176 IPL matches scored 6,397 runs with four hundred and 61 half-centuries, has won the coveted Orange cap three times, cementing his place as one of the league's greatest.

Having retired from ODI, and Tests, IPL 2024 will act as a perfect practice ground for the upcoming ICC T20 2024, where Warner could also announce his retirement from professional cricket.

Several other players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Dinesh Karthik, Faf Du Plessis, Sunil Narine, and Piyush Chawla could also feature in the league for the final time, with mega auction upcoming in 2025.
