Captaincy has always been a matter of great pride and responsibility at the international stage. The history of cricket has stood witness to some of the most successful leaders of men at the highest level, captains who have acted as inspirational figures to their troops by leading from the front and pushing the entire team towards a common goal.

Huge fanfare and praise is reserved for successful captains at the top-level game, but they also face abundance of criticism and naysaying when the team falters. Unless power-hungry, few value-based individuals are brave enough to walk the tightrope where they could be deemed heroes and villains depending on the last outcome.

At OneCricket, we focus today on five such leaders of men who were courageous enough to take the pressure and guide their nation to glory at the international stage. Captains from past and present with the best winning percentage across formats.

Top 5 Captains With Best Winning Percentage

Rohit Sharma

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is currently the leading skipper in terms of win percentage. The experienced Indian batter, who overtook India's all-format leadership mantle at the beginning of last year, is holding a winning percentage of 74 after 100 matches in charge. The win over England at the ICC World Cup 2023 was Rohit's 74th victory as India's captain after 40 ODIs, 51 T20Is and 9 Tests.

Ricky Ponting

Next best is Australian legend Ricky Ponting, who led the mighty Aussies in their pomp. Ponting's all-conquering men enjoyed world dominance, winning everywhere in Test match cricket while reigning supreme in two successive ODI World Cups under their inspirational skipper. The batting great led his troops from the front and pushed them to unparalleled heights at his peak. Ponting enjoyed a win percentage of 70.51 at the top job.

Asghar Afghan

One of Afghanistan's inspirational captains, who oversaw their ascent from the lower runs of the sport to become the protagonist of world cricket's most beautiful fairytale, Afghan is part of the esteemed list at the third spot. The middle-order giant, who retired from international cricket during the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE, won 78 of his 115 matches at the helm and enjoyed a win percentage of 69.64.

Hansie Cronje

The controversial figure of Cronje stands fourth in the list despite a horrific end to his tenure that saw South African cricket face one of its lowest points at the onset of the match-fixing saga at the turn of the century. Before it all fell apart, Cronje had emerged as a hero for the Proteas, their inspirational captain, who not only enjoyed success as a batter but also masterminded his country's rise as a post-apartheid force in world cricket. Cronje had a win percentage of 67.02 with 126 wins in 191 matches.

Steve Waugh

Talking of inspirational figures, who fits the bill better than Australian legend Steve Waugh as he built the strong foundation on which the tremendous rise of Ponting's men could be made possible. Waugh is regarded one of the strongest ever captains seen at the highest level with a remarkable body of work in the pre-T20 era. Waugh was a highly successful leader in Test cricket and guided the Aussies to the 1999 World Cup triumph. Under him, Australia enjoyed a win percentage of 66.67 over 163 matches.
