In the 32nd match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, the fans are in for a thrilling showdown as two top title contenders- New Zealand and South Africa go head-to-head at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) in Pune. This clash has major implications, as a victory would almost certainly secure a spot in the semi-finals for either team.

New Zealand had a tough loss to Australia in their previous match, despite an impressive batting performance that nearly led to victory.

However, their bowlers have struggled in their last two games, resulting in consecutive defeats. The absence of skipper Kane Williamson, who is still sidelined, adds to their challenges.

South Africa, on the other hand, pulled off a dramatic win against Pakistan and currently holds the second position on the points table.

They have bounced back after a loss to the Netherlands, securing consecutive victories against England, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The Proteas have showcased strong batting performances and achieved significant wins, building their confidence as they enter the crucial round-robin stage.

As both teams prepare to take on each other, let's analyse and find out the on-field contests which could decide the game's outcome.

Trent Boult vs Temba Bavuma

In the previous match in Pune, the pitch offered assistance to pacers, particularly with the new ball. If there's any help from the wicket, Trent Boult becomes an even more potent threat. He has a knack for taking wickets in the powerplay, making Bavuma's early dismissal a priority for New Zealand.

Bavuma is a dangerous player once he gets settled, and although they haven't faced each other in ODIs, Boult has dismissed Bavuma once in Test cricket. The battle between Boult and Bavuma promises to be intense.

Marco Jansen vs Will Young

Another intriguing powerplay battle features Kiwi opener Will Young up against the in-form Marco Jansen. Jansen has consistently provided early breakthroughs for South Africa in this World Cup.

He can move the ball back into the right-hander, making him a significant threat to Young. While Young has been in excellent form, he'll need to negotiate Jansen's threat in the early stages. These two have faced each other only once in Test cricket, with Jansen dismissing Young on that occasion.

Quinton de Kock vs Glenn Phillips

After Phillips' impressive performance against Australia, where he took three crucial wickets, no batter will underestimate him. Captain Tom Latham, known for his tactical acumen, may opt to deploy Phillips's off-spin to slow down the pace against the aggressive Quinton de Kock.

De Kock favours pace on the ball, and using Phillips to apply pressure on him can be a strategic move. In the previous game, Phillips dismissed two well-set left-handed batters on a flat track. Removing de Kock early can enable New Zealand to build pressure on South Africa.

Daryl Mitchell vs Gerald Coetzee

This battle pits two aggressive players against each other. Daryl Mitchell, known for his calm demeanour, has been one of the most dynamic players for New Zealand in this World Cup. His naturally aggressive approach allows him to maintain a healthy strike rate and challenge opposition bowlers.

He'll face Gerald Coetzee, who has been the standout performer for South Africa in the tournament, often breaking partnerships. Mitchell enjoys playing pull shots, while Coetzee excels at using bouncers to dismiss batters. This promises to be an exciting contest.

Heinrich Klaasen vs Mitchell Santner

Heinrich Klaasen's impact with the bat in this World Cup has been significant, and his aggressive style is reminiscent of AB de Villiers' presence in the 2015 edition of the tournament. He has the ability to take on bowlers from the outset, and after a rare failure against Pakistan, he'll be eager to return to dominating form.

To counter Klaasen's attacking play, New Zealand may turn to Mitchell Santner. While Klaasen handles spin well, Santner brings IPL experience from playing in Pune, where the match will be held. As a left-arm spinner, Santner is also in good form, making this contest highly anticipated.
