Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, has come to the defense of Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam amidst intense criticism from the country’s cricket fraternity and media.

Vaughan slammed critics for targetting Babar Azam

Vaughan expressed his dismay over the unsavoury treatment meted out to Babar in the midst of the World Cup 2023 held in India.

Taking to Twitter and voicing his concern, Vaughan remarked that the manner in which Babar has been criticized is totally unacceptable.

“The way he has been treated is totally unacceptable .. #Pakistan,” wrote Vaughan.

Furthermore, while discussing the matter on Cricbuzz, Vaughan opined that the way Babar has been treated, particularly with rumors of leadership changes mid-tournament, is deeply disrespectful. He praised Babar for his outstanding contributions to Pakistan and global cricket and conveyed that any such decisions or discussions should be reserved for post-tournament.

"I just don't like the lack of respect that Babar Azam. I just think it's a disgrace that these stories are being leaked. The stories that Shaheen is going to be the captain and all that. Babar is a wonderful player, he has been fantastic for Pakistan, and fantastic for the world game.

This kind of stories in the middle of the World Cup... leave it to the end. If at the end of the World Cup, you think that he is not the right person to take Pakistan, I can understand, you are allowed to make that decision. But during the World Cup, the kind of gossip coming from your board and people within Pakistan cricket, I find that really disrespectful," said Vaughan.

Meanwhile, Babar has found himself under the microscope particularly due to Pakistan's not-so-fruitful results in the ongoing World Cup. Despite a strong start with victories over the Netherlands and a historic run chase against Sri Lanka, Pakistan's momentum waned after their defeat to India, followed by losses to Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa.

The loss to Afghanistan, a team ranked lower, led to harsh comments from former cricketers who critiqued the team's fitness and on-field demeanour. The match saw Afghanistan effortlessly chasing down a target of 283 with 8 wickets in hand, casting further doubts over Babar's leadership.
