Harshal Patel won the Purple cap in IPL 2021

In the past 16 years, the Indian Premier League has turned out to be the biggest entertainer when it comes to the T20 leagues from around the world. IPL always holds a special place in the hearts of the fans. In the last 16 seasons, IPL has seen some of the greatest players who would do anything for their franchise to help them lift the trophy, but only a few could manage to actually do the same.

When the world was going through a not-so-good time, the IPL suffered a bit too and took place in two halves as Covid-19 put a halt for some time. But all the players were ready to be in a bubble and provide the best entertainment to the fans. OneCricket takes you back to the time of IPL 2021 when we saw some of the best bowlers, who turned the fortunes of their team and entertained the fans.

Let's have a look at the top five bowlers with the most wickets in the IPL 2021 season.

Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore) - 32 Wickets

Harshal Patel was a bits-and-pieces cricketer in the Indian Premier League until the year 2021. Until the 2021 season, he never even played all the games of any season. But his time at Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021 changed everything for him, as he went on to pick 32 wickets in a single season and took the team to the playoffs as well.

Bangalore bought him for 20 lakhs before the 2021 season and Harshal in response delivered for a lot more than the amount he got. He was just a wicket away from breaking Dwayne Bravo's record of most wickets as he equalled the same with his magnificent performances. He also picked up a fifer against the Mumbai Indians and recorded his best IPL figures as 5/27.

Avesh Khan (Delhi Capitals) - 24 Wickets

The right-arm fast bowler from Madhya Pradesh, Avesh Khan had a great season in the IPL 2021 while playing for Delhi Capitals and picked up 24 wickets taking the team to the qualifier 2 of the tournament as well. Everything changed after his brilliant performance in 2021 as he went on to make his India debut the very next year.

Avesh Khan with his sheer pace and cheeky slower ones disturbed the best of batters in the world. He wasn't only the wicket-taking option for the Delhi Capitals but also an economical one as his economy throughout the season was just 7.37. He was then picked by the Lucknow Super Giants owing to his exceptional performances.

Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) - 21 Wickets

If there's one bowler in the world who can bowl yorkers consistently, then it's none other than Mumbai Indians' gun, Jasprit Bumrah. He has the ability to deceive the best of batters with his pacey yorkers and slower ones with the added ability to bowl economically in the death overs where only a few bowlers can succeed.

During the IPL 2021 season, Jasprit Bumrah went on to pick 21 wickets and was among the top three wicket-takers of the season. Unfortunately, his team did not have a great time in the tournament as they could not manage to qualify for the playoffs due to the poor net run rate, but he delivered like he always does and had a great tournament.

Shardul Thakur (Chennai Super Kings) - 21 Wickets

There's something about the Chennai Super Kings, as the players keep on improving and perform way better than they did for the other franchise. The same is the case with Shardul Thakur, as he was a different bowler for Chennai but as soon as he left the franchise, his performances were not up to his potential.

Shardul Thakur was the highest wicket-taker for the Chennai Super Kings in the run to their fourth IPL title. He went on to pick 21 wickets in the season and helped Chennai become the Champions for the fourth time. Even in the final, he went on to pick three wickets and eventually lifted the trophy.

Mohammed Shami (Punjab Kings) - 19 Wickets

The premium Indian fast bowler, Mohammed Shami is one of the greatest seamers among the current players and recently became the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup 2023 as well. Even in the IPL 2023, Shami was the leading wicket-taker for Gujarat Titans and took the team to the finals.

While playing for the Punjab Kings in the year 2021, he bowled effectively and was the leading wicket-taker of Punjab. His team could not reach the playoffs but his bowling was brilliant as went on to scalp 19 wickets, bowling economically with the best figures of 3/21.
