Scoring a century in Test match cricket is a dream many aim to accomplish. While some manage to achieve it, others fall agonizingly close of the elusive three-figure mark.
In the long history of Test cricket, there have been many instances of players getting dismissed on the dreadly score of 99, while only a few of them have faced the same fate twice in their careers. Therefore, in this article, we will have a look at the list of players who have been dismissed on 99 the most number of times in Test cricket.
6. Richie Richardson - 2 Times
Sharing the top spot with two dismissals is West Indies' right-handed batting great Sir Richie Richardson. The former Caribbean superstar, who was one of the West Indian greats and has 5,949 runs in his 86 Test innings, but has been dismissed on 99 twice in his fantastic Test career.
The first instance came against India back in 1989 at Port of Spain, where he was dismissed by Kapil Dev, who knocked him over after facing 277 deliveries, while the second instance came against Australia at Barbados in 1991, where he was sent back to the pavilion by Mark Waugh, who trapped him in front of the stumps as he faced 156 balls.
5. John Wright - 2 Times
Another player who has been dismissed twice on 99 is New Zealand's John Wright, who was known more for his stint as the head coach of the Indian cricket side. The Kiwi batter, who used to open the innings for his team, was an influential player for New Zealand back in the day, as he amassed 5,334 runs in 82 matches, but lost his wicket twice on the score of 99.
Once against Australia and the second time against England in 1987 and 1992, respectively. The first time it happened was in Melbourne, and the second game was against England at Christchurch.
