Go big or go home – that’s the mantra in T20 cricket. But for some batters, the journey from the crease to the dugout has been all too brief. While the Indian Premier League has proven itself to be a stage for exquisite flamboyant stroke play, the grand stage of the tournament has also witnessed its share of batters perishing without troubling the score keepers.

Here, we take a look at five players who have recorded the highest number of ducks in IPL history.

5. Sunil Narine – 16 ducks in 111 innings

KKR zealot Sunil Narine has accrued 16 ducks in 111 innings spanning 178 matches in IPL. A bowler by profession and a pinch-hitter with the bat, the West Indies-based seasoned campaigner spent the initial years of his IPL career as a lower-order batter before becoming one of the first-choice openers for his franchise.

While he has gathered 16 ducks in his IPL journey so far, Narine holds an astonishing batting strike rate of 165.93. The T20 globetrotter also holds the distinction of tonking one of the fastest IPL half-centuries of all time.

4. Piyush Chawla – 16 ducks in 92 innings

Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history. Unfortunately for the 2014 title winner, the cricketer is also one of the highest aggregators of scoreless innings in the tournament. In his 192-match IPL career, Chawla has unwillingly collected 16 ducks across 92 innings.

Having played for four different franchises in his career so far, Piyush Chawla may have unfurled a handy cameo or two, much like his match-winning one in the 2014 final, but the cricketer still holds a dismal average of just 11.14 as a batter in IPL matches.

3. Rohit Sharma – 18 ducks in 253 innings

Legendary opening batter and Mumbai Indians veteran Rohit Sharma has garnered 18 ducks in his expansive 258-match IPL career (253 innings). A former Deccan Chargers superstar, Sharma still remains one of the greatest IPL batters of all time, and also one of the most decorated players in the history of the tournament with six titles, including five as a captain.

Sharma has minted over 6,500 runs in 253 innings with two tons and 43 half-centuries to stand third among IPL’s leading run-aggregators behind national teammates Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

2. Dinesh Karthik – 18 ducks in 234 innings

IPL’s quintessential journeyman and former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has registered 18 ducks in 234 IPL innings spanning 257 matches. One of the most experienced players in IPL history, Karthik’s duck tally marks the highest among all Indian players in the tournament.

With a penchant of scoring quick runs down the order, the Indian stumper overall holds a prolific record with the bat, having accrued nearly 5,000 runs at a strike rate of 135.36, with a healthy batting average of 26.31. The blistering right-handed batter has also crossed the 50-run mark 22 times in his IPL career.

1. Glenn Maxwell – 19 ducks in 130 innings

Explosive Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has recorded 19 ducks in just 130 IPL innings to stand at the top of the unwanted record, with the latest of them being his scoreless appearance at the start of the IPL 2025 season. With an average of one scoreless knock nearly every seven innings, Maxwell also holds a below-par batting average of just 24.52. From his debut in 2012 to date, he has played 135 matches for four different franchises, and sustained an absolute horror show for the RCB in 2024 by minting just 52 runs in nine innings.

Despite his underwhelming record with the bat, franchises still seem eager to acquire the services of the champion Australian cricketer, as evidenced by his recent IPL price tags.
