Thursday night in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 saw records tumbling in both innings of the Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars face-off in match 17 of the season in Sydney.
Meg Lanning's first innings masterclass of 135(74) saw the Stars cruise to the total of 219/4 as the third-highest total in WBBL history. But what followed in the second innings shook the two-time champions Sixers, after they were bowled out for a mere total of 42 runs, sustaining a 111 run defeat (DLS).
Here's the list of the lowest WBBL scores in its history.
5. Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers, 2018: 68 all-out
The Chamari Athapaththu-led Renegades only managed 68 runs in match 48 of the WBBL, 2018, in Canberra when they faced the Adelaide Strikers.
Nicola Carey led the Strikers bowling attack with a brilliant 3/10 (3.5), while Rene Farrell and Stafanie Taylor took two each in three overs, conceding 10 and 11, respectively. Amy Satterthwaite was the Renegades' top scorer with 17(19).
4. Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers, 2017: 66 all-out
During the all-important semi-final fixture of WBBL 2017, Hurricanes were asked to chase 170 runs to reach the final in Brisbane. However, their middle order capitulated against Dane van Niekerk's impeccable leg-spin bowling and got bundled for just 66 in 14.1 overs.
Niekerk scalped 3/15(4), alongside Ashleigh Gardner's 2/9(3). All the others chipped in with a wicket as they reached the final and won the title. Hurricanes' opener Erin Burns was their top scorer with 14(15).
3. Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Renegades, 2017: 66 all-out
During match 16 of WBBL 2017/18, Brisbane Heat travelled to Melbourne to face the Renegades and elected to bat first. Things didn't go as per the plan as Beth Mooney (11) and Deandra Dottin (14) finished as the only batters with double-digit scores. Heat were dismantled for 66 in 16.1 overs.
Four MR-W bowlers — Lea Tahuhu, Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham and Amy Satterthwaite finished with two wickets each, before they chased down the score in 10.5 overs.
2. Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars, 2025: 42 all-out
The latest addition to the top-5, the Sixers were asked to chase 220 in North Sydney, during match 17 of WBBL 2025, as they face Kim Garth's wrath on the night. She got four of the top-5 batters in her spell of 4/3 (2), as the Sixers got all-out under 8 overs.
None of their batters managed to score in double-digits, and Ellyse Perry's 9(6) was their top score on the day.
1. Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers, 2023: 29 all-out
In just their second match of the 2023 WBBL season, the Strikers came up against the eventual champions, AS-W, in Adelaide and decided to bowl first, as Katie Mack put on a show for her 86(50) to take her team to 177/3.
While chasing the target, none of the Stars batters could cross Sophia Dunkley's 9(10), getting bowled out for a forgettable 29 runs in 9.3 overs. The second-highest score for them was 5 extra runs.
Megan Schutt and Amanda-Jade Wellington were the standout bowlers with 3/3 (3) and 3/4(2), respectively. Anesu Mushangwe and Tahlia McGrath took two wickets each in Adelaide's 148-run thumping win.
