Former Delhi Capitals captain, Meg Lanning, who was released by the WPL franchise, silenced her critics with a knock for the ages as the right-handed batter smacked a 61-ball century in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) to audition for the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction.
Playing for Melbourne Stars, Lanning smashed 135 off 74 balls, and it turned out to be the third-highest individual score in WBBL history. The batter ended with a strike rate of 182.43 as the Stars reached 219/4 in their allotted 20-overs against the Sydney Sixers.
Records broken by Lanning vs Sixers
- With her whirlwind knock against the Sixers, Lanning broke several individual and team records. This was the third-highest individual score, with only Lizelle Lee (150*), and Grace Harris (136*) being the top two highest scorers.
- She hit 26 boundaries (22 fours, 4 sixes), the most hit by any player in a single WBBL innings. Also, her knock helped the Stars reach 219, which was the third-highest team total in the history of WBBL.
Lanning in demand in WPL auction
Despite being released by DC, Lanning will be in high demand in the upcoming mega auction. She took the Capitals to three back-to-back finals, but each time the side failed to cross the hurdle. In mega auctions, teams are only allowed to retain a limited set of players, and hence, Lanning was released.
However, in the ongoing WBBL, she has been in red-hot form, scoring 288 runs in four matches, with a strike rate of 163, and an average of 96. Several WPL teams need a quality leader and a batter, and hence, Lanning will be in demand when the auction takes place, mext week.
