List Of Batters With Most Runs In Every Cricket World Cup Edition

Since the inception of cricket, it is the batters who have captivated audiences all over the globe with different styles, approaches, and techniques. The shift in mindset came in 1975 when the first-ever Cricket World Cup materialised and gave fans first-hand viewing experiences of global stars who have dazzled over the years come together at one place.

The upcoming 2023 CWC in India will once again give a chance to crowds to cheer, enjoy and celebrate their favourite batters up-close and-personal,  after an run-heavy 2019 edition, where almost all batting records were shattered.

In this list, we lay down all the top run-getters from each edition of the CWC between 1975 and 2019. 


Most Runs in Each World Cup Edition

Glenn Turner - 333 runs in 1975

In the inaugural edition, New Zealand's Glenn Turner stole the limelight from most established stars to finish the tournament as the leading run-getter. In 4 matches, the opener slammed 333 runs with two hundred, which included 171* against East Africa in just 201 balls, the highest-ever that time. 


Gordon Greenidge - 253 runs in 1979

The hard-hitting West Indies opener Gordon Greenidge terrified bowlers with power and pure strength. With a best of 106*, Greenidge finished the competition with 253 runs in four games, including one ton and two fifties. Greenidge went on to lift his second consecutive World Cup title as well, after clinching the maiden edition in 1975. 


David Gower - 384 runs in 1983

One of England's most elegant and, at times, most horrendous-looking batters, David Gower, led the batting charts in the 1983 edition. Primed with exquisite strokeplay, Gower scored 384 runs in 7 matches, with included one century and a solitary fifty. The opener's 100 came in a losing cause against eventual winner India in the semi-finals.


Graham Gooch - 471 runs in 1987

In the first-ever WC outside England and a 50-overs format, Graham Gooch played with authority and control in alien conditions. Gooch amassed 471 runs in 8 matches, with one hundred and three fifties, but could only take England to the final, where Australia prevailed. 


Martin Crowe - 456 runs in 1992

One of the most talented and influential New Zealand batters, Martin Crowe, displayed technical superiority during the 1992 event. With almost every shot available under the sun, Crowe ended with 456 runs in nine matches, which included one hundred and four half-centuries.  


Sachin Tendulkar - 523 runs in 1996

India's Sachin Tendulkar blossomed in the 1996 showpiece event, making everyone take note of his brilliance. Carrying the batting on his shoulder, Tendulkar became the first player to cross 500+ runs in a WC, which had two 100s and three 50s, finishing with 523. 


Rahul Dravid - 461 runs 1999

Still making his name in the limited-overs format, India's Rahul Dravid shone in the 1999 WC in England. The classical and sound batter slammed bowlers all-around and ended the competition with 461 runs in 8 games with two centuries and three fifties to his name.

Dravid 145 against Sri Lanka at Taunton helped him and Sourav Ganguly register fourth highest-stand (318) in ODIs. 


Sachin Tendulkar - 673 runs in 2003

Tendulkar owned the 2003 batting charts, stockpiling 673 runs in 11 matches, including six fifties and one ton. The Indian batting maestro authoritatively charged bowlers, something that was evident against Pakistan during his knock of 98. 


Matthew Hayden - 659 runs in 2007

Leading Australia's dominance in the 2007 event, opener Matthew Hayden devastated opponents from the get-go. Hayden nearly broke Tendulkar's record and finished with 659 runs with three hundred and fifty in Australia's third successive WC win. 


Tillakaratne Dilshan - 500 runs in 2011

The aggressor for Sri Lanka in the 2011 edition, Tillakarante Dilshan amused fans with his out-of-the-box batting and guided his nation into the final. In 9 matches, Dilshan grafted 500 runs with an excellent conversion rate of two hundred and as many half-centuries.

Martin Guptill - 547 runs in 2015

In what was New Zealand's watershed tournament, Martin Guptill accumulated the most runs for his side and ended the competition with 547 runs in 9 games, which included two tons and a solitary fifty, which include two tons and solitary fifty. Guptill's 237* against West Indies remains the highest individual score in WC history.


Rohit Sharma - 648 runs in 2019

The 2019 edition witnessed batter loot runs, and India's Rohit Sharma did that exactly. In nine matches, the current India skipper slammed 648 runs with five centuries and one fifty, which to date is the most number of hundreds registered in a single edition. Overall, Sharma has six tons in WC events, which is on par with Tendulkar's tally (6).
