The Indian Premier League (IPL) keeps getting bigger and better with every passing season. According to a report published by NYSE-Listed Houlihan Lokey Inc, the business enterprise value of the T20 league has parachuted to $15.4 billion in 2023, a steep rise of 80% from the previous valuation of $8.5 billion.
In addition to this, the standalone value of the most lucrative cricket league in the world has surged from $1.8 billion in 2022 to $3.2 billion this year.
One of the major reasons behind this level of surge in IPL's brand value is the multi-billion dollar broadcasting (TV + digital) rights that were bought by Disney + Star & Viacom18 last year.
The two companies had shelled out a combined value of INR 48,390 crores to buy the television and broadcasting rights for a five-year period during an auction conducted by the BCCI in 2022.
Meanwhile, five-time champions and the recent winner of the IPL, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings' brand value has surged by a whopping 45.2%. Their total value as of now is $212 million.
The Royal Challengers from Bangalore are the 2nd most popular franchise, with their brand value accounting for $195 million.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals have pipped former champions Mumbai Indians in terms of brand value. RR's brand value rose by 103% in the past 12 months, while MI's brand grew by 34.8%.
