Indian Captains With the Most Sixes In The World Cups

The fans are all set for the World Cup 2023 scheduled to kick off from the 5th October. Hitting sixes is not just hammering the ball, but timing the the ball with perfection to clear the ropes. Not everyone can master the art of clearing the ropes, but there are a few who are known for hitting the long balls. 

The captains have a lot of responsibilities during a tournament like the World Cup, and hitting sixes is probably not one of them.  But we have a few Indian captains who have smashed the highest number of sixes in the World Cup, let's take a look into it:


Sourav Ganguly - 15 Sixes (2003)

Sourav Ganguly, the left-handed batter had an amazing time at the 2003 World Cup. The man who led the Indian team to the final of the tournament smashed 465 runs in 11 matches with an average of 58. He also smashed three centuries with a highest score of 112 against Namibia. Ganguly hammered 15 sixes in 11 games and has the highest number of sixes among others in a World Cup season. 


Kapil Dev - 07 Sixes (1983)

One of the stalwarts of Indian cricket, Kapil Dev gave his all for the 1983 World Cup title. He is one of the two captains who have won the World Cup trophy for India. In the 1983 World Cup, Kapil Dev smashed 303 runs in eight games including a highest score of 175 against Zimbabwe with a blistering average of 60. With seven sixes, Kapil Dev is the second on the list of Indian captains with the most number of sixes in a World Cup season. 


MS Dhoni - 06 Sixes (2015)

The captain cool, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the inventor of the helicopter shot is on the third with six sixes in the 2015 World Cup edition. MS Dhoni had a brilliant season considering he bats down the order as he smashed 237 runs in just six innings including two half-centuries. 

With an average of nearly 60 and the highest score of 85 against Zimbabwe, he led the team from the front to the semi-finals. 


Kapil Dev - 04 Sixes (1987)

Kapil Dev's stint at the World Cup 1987 brings him to this list for the second time. He had a decent time in this World Cup as well. He smashed 152 runs in five innings with an average of 50, including a highest score of 72 not out against New Zealand for which he was named Player of the Match. He managed to smash four sixes in the tournament, so his run at the 1987 World Cup comes at the fourth spot in the list.


MS Dhoni - 03 Sixes (2011)

The 2011 World Cup have a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans as the event took place in India. MS Dhoni led the team to win the title, which made it more special. He was not having a good time in the tournament until the final. Before the final, MS had 150 runs in eight games, but he turned things around and smashed 91 in the final against Sri Lanka with an iconic six to win the World Cup. Dhoni smashed only three sixes in the tournament including the iconic one which still gives goosebumps to 1.4 billion Indians.

These were the top five captaincy stints at the World Cup. Well, it will take just one or two games for Rohit Sharma, the man who will be leading the Indian team in the World Cup 2023. We all are familiar with his six-hitting abilities and undoubtedly, he will make it to this list anytime soon.
