While Indian cricket has been always filled with a plethora of batting talent, only a handful players have made a big splash by scoring centuries in Test cricket both in India and in other countries before they even turned 23 years old. This is a massive achievement because it shows they're not only super talented but also can adjust to different playing conditions and challenges all over the world.

From Ravi Shastri who was the first to set this record and showed others it was possible, to most recently, Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose bat did the talking with its brilliant performance, each of these players has a special story.

In this article, we're going to look at their incredible achievements of these batters, who at a young age, gave the cricketing community some spectacular moments. Here’s a look at players to have scored Test centuries both home and away before turning 23.

1. Ravi Shastri

A talented cricketer known for his all-round capabilities, Shastri etched his name into Indian cricket history by becoming the first Indian batter to score centuries both at home and away before turning 23. Shastri's first Test century was a significant 128 against Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi in January 1983, showcasing his ability to stand tall against formidable bowling attacks.

He continued this form with another century, 102, against a fierce West Indies team at the Antigua Recreation Ground in April 1983. His third ton, 139 against Pakistan at Iqbal Stadium in October 1984, further cemented his reputation as a reliable middle-order batsman. Shastri first ton at home came when he scored 142 against England at his home ground, Wankhede Stadium, in November 1984, followed by 111 at Eden Gardens in December 1984. Before turning 23, Shastri slammed five of his 11 Test centuries.

2. Vinod Kambli

Vinod Kambli burst onto the international scene with a flamboyance and talent that was hard to ignore. In just his third Test match, Kambli scored a mesmerizing double century, 224 against England at Wankhede Stadium in February 1993. He followed this with another double ton, 227 against Zimbabwe at Arun Jaitley Stadium in March 1993, showcasing his liking for big scores. Kambli's ability to convert starts into monumental innings was evident from his first away ton, 125 against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in July 1993, and a subsequent 120 at P Sara Oval.

These performances made Kambli the second Indian cricketer to achieve the feat of scoring centuries both at home and away before turning 23. However, despite a start that promised a legendary career, Kambli's journey in international cricket was marred by inconsistency, form, and fitness issues, leading to a premature end to what could have been an illustrious career.

Revered globally as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history, Sachin Tendulkar had a prodigious start to his career, illustrating his genius with eight Test centuries before turning 23. Tendulkar's first Test century, 119 not out against England at Old Trafford in August 1990, was a harbinger of his remarkable career. His exceptional talent was further highlighted by centuries in Australia (148 not out at Sydney and 114 at Perth) and a gritty 111 against South Africa at Johannesburg, all of which were scored away from home.

Tendulkar's first home century came against England in Chennai in February 1993, a stunning 165, followed by dominating performances against Sri Lanka (142) and West Indies (179) at Nagpur in December 1994. Tendulkar's early exploits laid the foundation for a career that would be studded with records and accolades, marking him as a national icon and one of the game's all-time greats.

In a more recent proof of the endless charm of Indian cricket's talent pipeline, Yashasvi Jaiswal made headlines with his debut Test series against West Indies in 2023 in their backyard, scoring a commanding 171 and marking his arrival on the international stage with a Player of the Match performance. Furthermore, his remarkable 209 against England in January 2023, at a time when other batsmen struggled, not only highlighted his exceptional skill but also his temperament and ability to play long innings.

Jaiswal's achievements made him the fourth Indian cricketer to score Test centuries both at home and away before turning 23, joining an elite list of cricketers who have shown maturity and skill beyond their years. His entry into this exclusive club promises a bright future for Indian cricket, continuing the legacy of producing world-class batsmen.
