Major League Cricket (MLC), with its penchant for staging cracking contests, has swiftly emerged as a vibrant addition to the global T20 calendar. Its matches often spiral into high-scoring thrillers, producing some of the most exhilarating run-chases witnessed in recent franchise cricket.
Celebrating the spirit of MLC, here is a look at five of the highest targets successfully chased down, excluding the inaugural 2023 season since it did not carry an official T20 status.
5. Texas Super Kings 167-1 vs MI New York, Dallas, 2024
Texas Super Kings knocked defending champions MI New York out of the MLC 2024 race by reaching 167-1 in just 18.3 overs. Chasing 164 runs in the all-important Eliminator at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas Super Kings openers Devon Conway and captain Faf du Plessis crafted 101 runs for the first wicket in just 12.3 overs. While captain Faf blasted 72 from 47 balls with six fours and three huge sixes, Conway remained unbeaten at 51* off 43 balls with three fours and a six.
Aaron Hardie at number three also made lightwork of MI New York’s 163-8 with a burgeoning 22-ball 40*.
4. Seattle Orcas 169-1 vs Los Angeles Knight Riders, Dallas, 2024
Within the opening week of the MLC 2024 season, also at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Seattle Orcas chased down Los Angeles Knight Riders’ 168-run total with one ball and nine wickets left in the bank. After enduring the early loss of opener Nauman Anwar at the hands of LAKR’s Australian import Spencer Johnson within the third over, Ryan Rickelton bludgeoned 103 unbeaten runs from just 66 deliveries with nine fours and five maximums.
The unbeaten South African shared a record partnership of 152 runs for the second wicket with fellow national Quinton de Kock (51* off 46) to prevent another batting casualty for the Orcas in their comfortable chase.
3. San Francisco Unicorns 177-4 vs Washington Freedom, Dallas, 2024
Roughly a week prior to their meeting in the qualifier and the final of the MLC 2024 season, Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns crossed paths in match number 20 of the league stage in Dallas. In a rain-curtailed affair, Steve Smith-led Freedom batted first and mounted 174-3 in just 15.3 overs before players were called off the field.
After a brief delay, the Unicorns were set a revised target of 177 runs from 14 overs. As it turned out, Unicorns lost explosive opener Finn Allen off the very first ball to Akeal Hosein. Sanjay Krishnamurthi at number three, however, thwarted Freedom bowlers by compiling 79* regal runs off just 42 balls. Josh Inglis (45 off 17) and Hassan Khan (32* off 11) also unleashed cracking cameos as Unicorns chased down their target in just 13.4 overs with six wickets to spare.
2. San Francisco Unicorns 188-7 vs MI New York, Oakland, 2025
Reeling at 108-6, soon to be 145-7 in a chase of 183 runs against MI New York in match number six of the MLC 2025 season at the Oakland Coliseum, Xavier Bartlett scripted one of the best run-chase fightbacks for the San Francisco Unicorns, all while batting at number eight. Bartlett launched four fours and five huge sixes to pound 59* runs from just 25 balls, as he stormed the Unicorns to 188-7 in 19.1 overs.
Hassan Khan also smeared 43 from just 17 balls in the middle order after Unicorns slipped to 42-4 at the end of the powerplay overs.
1. MI New York 203-3 vs Seattle Orcas, Oakland, 2025 (tonight)
MI New York pulled off the first-ever 200-plus chase in the history of MLC by blazing past Seattle Orcas in match number nine of the MLC 2025 season in Oakland. Chasing 201 runs for a win, MI New York reached 203-3 in just 19 overs to complete a seven-wicket demolition job, thus bowing out of the Oakland leg of the competition in style.
Opening batter Monank Patel headlined the chase by blasting 93 runs from just 50 balls with eight fours and seven huge sixes. New Zealand star Michael Bracewell also composed a fiery 35-ball fifty at number three, while Kieron Pollard clattered 26* off just 10 deliveries with four fours and a six to seal the deal.
