When it comes to red-ball magic in Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya has made Galle his happy hunting ground. But the first innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh threw up a shocker as Jayasuriya walked off the field wicketless for the first time in his career at Galle.

Bangladesh Stop Jayasuriya’s Wicket Run At Galle

After 20 straight innings at the venue where he is usually the one calling the shots, the left-arm spinner ended the innings with nothing to show in the wickets column.

Prabath Jayasuriya’s numbers at Galle read like a dream. Before this match, he had racked up 80 wickets in just 19 innings at the venue. That is nearly 70% of his career Test wickets (116 in total) coming from this one ground alone. It’s safe to say the Galle pitch has been his stage and batters have danced to his tune here, until now.

Bangladesh, to their credit, weren’t just playing, they were dictating terms. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 148 and Mushfiqur Rahim’s marathon 163 took the game away from Sri Lanka. By the time the Tigers were all out for 495, the damage was done. And Jayasuriya’s figures? 48 overs, 2 maidens, 154 runs, zero wickets.

That is not the kind of scoreboard line he us used to seeing at Galle. The ball didn’t talk. The turn was muted. And the Bangladesh batters didn’t bite.

Since his Test debut in 2022, Jayasuriya has made Galle a graveyard for visiting teams. His best figures are 7/52 in an innings and 12/177 in a match, both came on this turf. He has collected nine five-wicket hauls here and two ten-fors.

It’s only one innings. And every streak has to break sometime. Jayasuriya still has the second innings to bounce back, and if history is any proof, he is not the type to stay quiet for long.
