Playing under clear blue skies is often considered the ideal setting for a day of cricket, with sunlight casting the perfect stage for bat and ball to flourish. However, excessive sun and unusually bright conditions can occasionally become a hindrance rather than a delight. And that is precisely what unfolded during a recent T20 Blast 2025 fixture between Kent Spitfires and Gloucestershire.

Shortly after Gloucestershire openers got off to a flying start in their chase of 158 runs at Canterbury’s St Lawrence Ground in a South Group game of the competition, players from both sides were forced to leave field for the while due to the sun.

T20 Blast 2025: Sun Stops Play At Canterbury

In a bizarre incident, ‘too much sun’ stopped play in Canterbury during Gloucestershire’s run-chase against Kent Spitfires in the Vitality T20 Blast 2025 match on Wednesday, June 18. Gloucestershire openers Miles Hammond and D'Arcy Short were forced to leave the field inside the powerplay as the sunlight was directly shining into their eyes at one stage.

The players eventually returned to the ground after an eight-minute delay caused by the ‘good weather’ setting.

The Gloucestershire cricket club even posted an update at the time of the incident, explaining that the players were called off the pitch for their own safety.

As it happened, the Gloucestershire openers returned to the field without losing any momentum, proceeding with their chase unscathed and undeterred in pursuit of the target. D'Arcy Short cracked a quick 21-ball 33 while Miles Hammond made 25 from 19 balls.

Captain Jack Taylor belted four fours and two huge sixes in his 36-ball knock of 54* to help Gloucestershire overhaul Kent’s 157-9 with seven wickets and 10 balls to spare, as they registered their first win of the 2025 T20 Blast season.
