Bangladesh's biggest ODI defeats [Source: @BCBtigers/X.com]
Cricket is a game of glorious highs and soul-crushing lows, and any team, no matter how dominant, has had days they'd rather forget. Bangladesh, with a team that is notorious for its fanatics and unstable matches, has experienced its fair share of brutal losses in the ODI series.
Recently, chasing 294 runs against Afghanistan in the 3rd ODI of the series, the Tigers were bundled out on 93/10, thus enduring a humiliating defeat.
On that note, let’s revisit the 5 biggest defeats for Bangladesh in ODIs by runs.
4. 200 runs vs India, South Africa
Before they became one of India’s regular challengers, Bangladesh were still learning the ropes in the early 2000s. In Dhaka, India’s top order, led by Virender Sehwag (63) and Yuvraj Singh (102), dominated with class and control. Set a target of over 276, Bangladesh collapsed quickly on 76 and fell short by a massive 200 runs.
In 2017, Bangladesh met a similar fate against South Africa. The Proteas hammered 369 runs after Faf du Plessis’ unbeaten 91 off 67 balls. In response, the Tigers could muster only 169 runs as Dane Paterson’s 3-wicket-haul led to a 200-run defeat.
4. 200 runs vs Afghanistan, Abu Dhabi, 2025
This one will sting for a while. Afghanistan crushed Bangladesh by 200 runs in the 3rd ODI of the UAE series. Afghanistan’s batters fired brilliantly, with Ibrahim Zadran (95) and Mohammad Nabi (62) leading the charge to set a 293-run total.
In the second inning, Bilal Sami annihilated Bangladesh with a 5-wicket-haul, thus bowling them out for a mere 93 runs to seal a thumping 200-run victory. Losing by 200 runs to a team that used to be considered an underdog shows how quickly cricket dynamics are changing.
3. 206 runs vs South Africa - Mirpur, 2011
During the 2011 World Cup, Bangladesh were full of confidence after beating England. But when they faced South Africa in Mirpur, it was one-way traffic. South Africa’s Robin Peterson and Lonwabo Tsotsobe tore through the Bangladeshi batting lineup with 7 wickets combined.
Chasing a tough total of 285 runs, Bangladesh folded for just 78 runs, suffering a humiliating 206-run defeat. The silence in the Mirpur crowd said it all, it was one of those days when nothing went right.
2. 227 runs vs India - Chattogram, 2022
Fast-forward to 2022, and Bangladesh were no longer newcomers, they were hosting a strong Indian side. But on that December day in Chattogram, India completely outclassed them. Ishan Kishan smashed a double century (210 off 131 balls), one of the fastest in ODI history, while Virat Kohli added a fluent hundred.
Chasing 410 was always going to be impossible, and Bangladesh were bowled out for just 182. The 227-run loss was one of their worst-ever home defeats and a painful reminder of India’s dominance in the subcontinent.
1. 237 runs vs Pakistan - Dhaka, 2000
It was Bangladesh's inaugural ODI against Pakistan since achieving Test status. Pakistan, led by Imran Nazir and Mohammad Yusuf’s 80-run knock each, amassed a humongous total of runs (320/3).
Bangladesh batting order collapsed under pressure in response, scoring only a fraction of the total. Only 2 of their batsmen could manage to score in double figures, and the Tigers were soon routed for 87 runs. The 237-run defeat remains their biggest in history and a reminder of how raw the team was in those early days.
