Amit Mishra, the Indian leg-spinner, has drawn the curtain on a distinguished 25-year career, announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 42-year-old bows out as a modern IPL great, leaving behind a legacy defined by his record-breaking performances. His final outing for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024 capped a journey where he became the league's seventh-highest wicket-taker and its sole proprietor of three hat-tricks.

As we celebrate his contributions to the game, his legendary status is forever etched in IPL folklore. Here's a look back at five of his most devastating spells that showcase why he remains one of the most successful and crafty spinners the tournament has ever seen.

5) 3/11 vs Rising Pune Supergiant

Back in 2017, at the MCA Stadium in Pune, the leg-spinner magician Amit Mishra produced a match-winning spell for Delhi Daredevils in the 9th match of IPL against Rising Pune Supergiant. Defending 206, Mishra’s crafty leg-spin dismantled Pune’s middle and lower order, finishing with figures of 3/11 in 3 overs.

Mishra dismissed MS Dhoni, Rajat Bhatia, and Adam Zampa, ensuring Pune folded for just 108 in 16.1 overs. Mishra’s spell, combined with Sanju Samson’s century, sealed a 97-run win for Delhi.

4) 4/24 vs Mumbai Indians

On April 20, 2021, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Mishra turned the game for Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians. Bowling with guile and experience, Mishra delivered a stunning spell of 4/24 in 4 overs, removing the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard.

His breakthroughs derailed Mumbai’s innings, restricting them to 137/9 in 20 overs despite a brisk 44 from Rohit. In reply, Delhi chased the target with composure, finishing at 138/4 in 19.1 overs, led by Shikhar Dhawan’s 45 and Steven Smith’s 33. Mishra’s match-winning spell not only earned him the Player of the Match award but also highlighted his enduring impact in the IPL.

3) 4/19 vs Pune Warriors India

12 years back, at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune, Amit Mishra produced one of the finest all-round displays in IPL history to guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to an 11-run win over Pune Warriors in the 22nd match of IPL 2013. After contributing a crucial 30 off 24 balls with the bat to lift SRH to 119/8 in 20 overs, Mishra turned the game with the ball.

The leg-spinner delivered a magical spell of 4/19, including a stunning hat-trick by dismissing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda. His accuracy and flight broke the Warriors’ chase, restricting them to 108 in 19 overs despite promising starts from Robin Uthappa and Angelo Mathews.

2) 4/9 vs Kings XI Punjab

Second spell to rank on the list is from 2011, at Dharamsala, where Amit Mishra produced another unforgettable IPL moment when he claimed a hat-trick during Deccan Chargers’ 82-run win over Kings XI Punjab in the 67th match of IPL.

After Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten 95 off 57 balls and Ravi Teja’s 60 off 41 powered Deccan to a massive 198/2 in 20 overs, Kings XI faltered in their chase. Punjab collapsed from 83/2 to 116 all out in 19 overs. Mishra turned the game on its head with a magical spell of 4/9, including a hat-trick by dismissing Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris in successive deliveries.

1) 5/17 vs Deccan Chargers

The final spell to top and crown Amit Mishra's legacy in IPL is a match in the year of IPL's inception. In a match against Deccan Chargers, batting first, Delhi rode on Gautam Gambhir’s 79 off 48 balls and Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten 68 off 52 balls to post a strong 194/4 in 20 overs.

In reply, Deccan Chargers started aggressively with Shahid Afridi’s 33 (14) and Venugopal Rao’s 34 (18), keeping them in the hunt. However, Amit Mishra cracked open the game for his team with a magical spell of 5/17, including a hat-trick in the 19th over. He dismissed Ravi Teja, RP Singh, and Pragyan Ojha in successive balls, sealing the win for Delhi.
