The year 2024 has turned into a remarkable phase for batters in Test cricket, as the format has witnessed a surge in prolific performances from several players. Among such standout individuals, five players have particularly distinguished themselves by hauling an impressive tally of centuries within the first nine months of the year.

Here we take a look at each of those five batters with the highest number of Test centuries to their names in the year 2024 so far.

5. Ollie Pope – 3 centuries in 20 innings

Elegant English batter Ollie Pope plundered three of his seven career hundreds within the first nine months of the year 2024. He started his year by punching out an innings for the ages, scoring 196 alluring runs at Hyderabad against India’s spin-heavy and a Jasprit Bumrah-starrer attack. Pope’s industrious 10-hour marathon helped England clinch a 28-run victory after facing a deficit of 190 runs at the halfway stage of the game.

The 26-year-old clattered another 121 later in the year, albeit at England’s usual ‘BazBall’ pace against West Indies in a match-winning cause in Nottingham. The final of Ollie Pope’s three centuries from 2024 so far occurred against a visiting Sri Lankan attack at The Oval, where he belted 154 runs at a near run-a-ball.

4. Shubman Gill – 3 centuries in 13 innings

Class personified, Shubman Gill, has pounded three centuries for Team India, all in winning causes, in his first seven Test appearances of the year. After registering twin failures on a hostile Newlands wicket, Gill bashed scores of 104 and 110 in two separate matches from India’s subsequent home series against England. Notably, the dashing right-hander belted each of those hundreds at a strike rate of above 70.

Gill seemed to have reserved his best for the visiting Bangladesh team in September at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, where his diligent 119* lifted Team India from a precarious 67-3 to a formidable 287-4d.

3. Kane Williamson – 3 centuries in 10 innings

New Zealand’s perennial batting legend Kane Williamson has listed three of his 32 career Test hundreds in the year 2024 alone. To be more precise, he flogged each of those tons in the space of just two weeks this February against South Africa. Williamson punched out scores of 118 and 109 at the Bay Oval to become only the fifth New Zealander in history to make hundreds in each innings of a Test.

In the very next match, the right-hander carved 133 unbeaten runs from 260 balls to navigate New Zealand to a successful run-chase of 267. Unfortunately for Kane Williamson, he managed to tally only two more fifty-plus scores in his subsequent six outings with the bat.

2. Joe Root – 4 centuries in 20 innings

English batting icon Joe Root pompously became the new flagbearer of ‘Fab Four’ this year by whizzing past the century tally of Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. In the process, he also extended his difference with Virat Kohli as Root is currently sitting on a pile of 34 Test hundreds.

The 33-year-old Englishman has so far logged four centuries in his first 11 matches of 2024, which includes the twin tons he smacked against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in August. Root also scored an elegant second innings century of 122 against West Indies in Nottingham to sustain his newfound purple patch with the bat. Perhaps the best of Root’s batting masterclass of the year remains the 122* he conjured against India on the dust bowl of Ranchi in February.

1. Kamindu Mendis – 5 centuries in 13 innings

Leading the year’s run-scoring and century-making race, rising Sri Lankan star Kamindu Mendis has pretty much done everything he can to cement his place in the national line-up for the next couple of seasons. Remarkably, the prodigious batting talent has achieved the same in essentially his first full year of Test cricket, considering he had to wait nearly two years to receive another cap after his 2022 debut against Australia.

Inscribed with Bradman-esque beginnings, Mendis seems to be hauling centuries for fun as he has already pounded five of them in his 12 innings of the year, which is also glittered with three additional fifty-plus scores. Moreover, the 26-year-old has also tallied nearly 1,000 runs in the year and is only going from strength-to-strength with each passing Test, as he has belted centuries in Bangladesh, England and is now piling up tons against New Zealand at home.
