The 18th match of the ongoing third season of the Women’s Premier League between UP Warriorz and Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been etched in history for a couple of major batting feats. Reeling at the bottom of the points table, Warriorz were able to spoil the party for the Royal Challengers, at least in the first innings.
Invited to bat first by visiting captain Smriti Mandhana, UPW-W registered the highest innings score and the highest individual score in the history of the tournament. As far as the team score is concerned, the seventh instance of a 200+ innings total in the WPL is also the first one to witness a team touching the 225-run mark. Below are the top 5 highest innings WPL totals:
1. 225/5 - UP Warriorz vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Led by a stroke-filled 43-ball 77-run opening partnership between Grace Harris (39) and Georgia Voll (99*), UP posted a historic innings total of 225/5 in 20 overs. If truth be told, at one point in time, it looked as if they would easily cross the 225-run mark as well.
The openers’ assault was followed by Kiran Navgire scoring 46 (16) comprising two fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 287.50. Voll, meanwhile, hit 17 fours and a six but missed becoming the first batter in the history of the WPL to thwack an individual century. Second one to miss the achievement by a solitary run, the 21-year-old player is the first one to remain unbeaten on 99.
2. 223/2 - Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru
An effort also possible due to opening batters’ head-start, the highest WPL innings total until tonight had come in the second match of the tournament played a couple of years ago. DC captain Meg Lanning (72) and batter Shafali Verma (84), who form the most successful opening pair in the competition, had scored individual half-centuries to power the team to 223/2 in 20 overs.
In what remains the only case of two batters joining hands for a partnership in excess of 150 runs, Lanning and Verma had shared a 162-run stand against Bengaluru at the Brabourne Stadium. Much like the latest match, the No. 3 in Marizanne Kapp had scored at a strike rate of >200.
3. 211/4 - Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz
To put on display a breathtaking start to their WPL campaign, Capitals were able to breach the 200-run mark yet again a couple of days later. Facing Warriorz at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, DC had put on board 211/4 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first by then UPW captain Alyssa Healy.
While Lanning had batted her way to a consecutive half-century, contributions from middle-order batters namely Jemimah Rodrigues (34*), Alice Capsey (21) and Jess Jonassen (42*) were pivotal in them putting on board a match-winning total.
4. 207/5 - Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Giants
Much like the Indian Premier League, the inaugural WPL clash was also a record-breaking affair. Invited to bat first by then Gujarat Giants captain Beth Mooney, Mumbai had scored 207/5 in 20 overs primarily because of captain Harmanpreet Kaur scoring 65* (30) including as many as 14 fours.
With impact-generating contributions from overseas all-rounders such as Hayley Matthews (47) and Amelia Kerr (45*), the inaugural champions were able to set the ball rolling in a splendid fashion in Navi Mumbai. A mere surrender in the second innings had resulted in a gargantuan 143-run victory for Indians – which remains the largest margin of victory (by runs) in the WPL till date.
5. 202/4 - Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Giants
The inaugural WPL 2025 match in Vadodara was an eyewitness to the highest successful run-chase in the history of the tournament. While Mandhana’s decision to bowl first couldn’t stop GG under the 200-run mark, all-rounder Ellyse Perry (57) and wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh (64*) scored eye-catching half-centuries to seal a 202-run chase with nine balls to spare.
That they were able to do so in spite of losing both the openers in the first two overs will be remembered as a significant achievement.
