The recently concluded 90th season of the Ranji Trophy resulted in a third title for Vidarbha. Having won all their titles within the last decade, Vidarbha have fared better than Mumbai and Saurashtra – both of whom have a couple of title wins to their name in this period.
With Vidarbha lifting Ranji Trophy 2024/25 under Aditya Sarwate, it makes him only the second captain in the last 10 years to achieve this milestone without having played international cricket. Below are more such astounding feats which were achieved during the course of this season:
Most Wickets In A Season
Vidarbha all-rounder Harsh Dubey, 22, now has the most wickets in a Ranji Trophy season. The left-arm spinner picked 69 wickets at an average of 16.98, an economy rate of 2.66 and a strike rate of 38.17 to surpass Bihar’s Ashutosh Aman (68), who had overtaken Hyderabad’s Kanwaljit Singh (59) during the 2018/19 season.
2. Highest Partnership In Ranji Trophy
Goa batters Snehal Kauthankar and Kashyap Bakhale became the first pair to stitch a partnership in excess of 600 runs in the Ranji Trophy. It all happened during their match against Arunachal Pradesh in Porvorim. In the process, the duo became only the second pair after Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene to share a 600+ stand in first-class cricket.
In addition to putting together an unbeaten 448-ball 606-run third-wicket stand, both Kauthankar and Bakhale also registered individual triple centuries at a strike rate of more than 100.
3. Second-Highest Run-Chase In Ranji Trophy
During their last league match against Odisha at the DRIEMS Ground, Services opening batters Suraj Vashisht and Shubham Rohilla registered a stunning 10-wicket victory by chasing down a 376-run target in 85.4 overs. While Vashisht scored a century, Rohilla managed to cross the 200-run mark to register the second-highest run-chase in Ranji history.
4. Five-Wicket Hauls Against Most Opponents
Highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy, veteran Kerala all-rounder Jalaj Saxena picked a total of five five-wicket hauls this season. One of those hauls allowed him to become the first player to pick a five-fer against as many as 19 different opponents. Technically, the 38-year-old joint fourth-highest wicket-taker this season has dismissed five batters in an innings against half the teams who partake in the Ranji Trophy.
5. Most Matches As Captain
Sachin Baby, who unsuccessfully led Kerala in the finals, has played the most Ranji Trophy matches (53) as a captain among active players. Fourth on the overall list, he is closely followed by Tripura’s Mandeep Singh (52).
