Vishal Jayswal might not be a household name yet, but the 27-year-old left-arm spinner from Gujarat grabbed attention on a Vijay Hazare Trophy afternoon in Bengaluru. At the Centre of Excellence ground on Friday, Jayswal produced a moment that will define his career the dismissal of Virat Kohli.
A classical slow left-arm orthodox, Jayswal relies on flight, drift and subtle variations rather than raw turn. He has the ability to draw batters into false shots in the air and then beat them with guile. Handy with the bat down the order, his primary value remains his craft with the ball.
Vishal Jayswal’s red-ball success and rise through the ranks
Jayswal made his senior debut for Gujarat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022 and followed it up with his Vijay Hazare Trophy debut in November 2023, but it is in red-ball cricket that he truly excels.
He was the standout bowler in the 2022–23 U23 CK Nayudu Trophy, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 70 wickets and helping Gujarat U23 clinch the title.
As a result, Vishal Jayswal earned his Ranji Trophy debut in February 2024 against Tripura in Ahmedabad and since then his first-class numbers have been impressive with 40 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 23.52, a strike rate of 44.6, and best figures of 6 for 59.
A memorable day against Virat Kohli
After everything he has achieved in his career so far, nothing could have matched what unfolded today. Kohli was in sublime touch, racing to a 29-ball fifty and looking set for another big score after a century in his previous outing for Delhi.
Just when Kohli seemed unstoppable, Jayswal struck with a perfectly tossed-up delivery, drawing Kohli out of the crease, beating the outside edge, before Urvil Patel completed the stumping to dismiss him for 77.
For Vishal Jayswal, it was more than just a wicket. It was a career-defining moment, a delivery he will remember for the rest of his life, and perhaps the one that announces his arrival on the bigger stage.
