Legendary Indian cricketer Virat Kohli sustained his purple patch in 50-over cricket as he smashed another belligerent knock in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The talismanic batter had an outstanding start to the tournament, scoring a fabulous hundred in Delhi's VHT opener against Andhra.
He followed it up with another impactful knock, stepping up as a lone warrior for his team against Gujarat.
Virat Kohli lights up VHT with counterattacking fifty
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Gujarat had a great start to the match, with Chintan Gaja dismissing the in-form Priyansh Arya. However, the southpaw's early departure had little impact on Virat Kohli, who looked sublime from the word go.
Hailed for his incredible ability to anchor an innings, Kohli adopted an aggressive route to bail Delhi out of the early setback. While Priyansh Arya's opening partner, Arpit Rana, safely negotiated 30 deliveries at the other end, Kohli decided to take on the Gujarat bowlers, stitching a vital 72-run stand with the former.
Arpit and Nitish Rana fell prey to Gujarat's left-arm spinner Vishal Jayswal in quick succession. However, Virat Kohli continued his onslaught on his opponents, eventually bringing up a scintillating half-century. He hammered thirteen boundaries and a six for his 61-ball 77 before being stumped off Jayswal's bowling.
Virat Kohli keeps 2027 WC hopes alive with red-hot form
Virat Kohli's failure in the first two ODIs against Australia fuelled his retirement talks. Despite the talismanic cricketer proving his worth time and again in the past, critics questioned his form and readiness for the 2027 World Cup.
However, the dead rubber in Sydney provided Kohli with the much-needed impetus, helping him prove his doubters wrong. The home ODI series against South Africa was the icing on the cake, as Kohli rediscovered himself with successive stunning centuries in the first two matches. Considering he has been firing on all cylinders, it would make little sense to question his place in India's 2027 World Cup squad for the time being.
